Well a new leftist president just got elected. He was once in the army and is similar to Hugo Chavez in that he has an anti-US Imeprialist outlook and wants to see greater workers and statem invovlment in industry. The shining path gurilla group that was once quite powerful is a rememnant and has lost most of it's grass roots support. Hope thats some help.

His name is Ollanta Humala, he's an indigeneous Peruvian and a member of the Union for Peru or the Peruvian Nationalist party, which is odd. Some have argued that he's more a populist than a leftist. Also, he hasn't won the election yet. He came in first place, but failed to capture more than 505 of the vote, so there will be a run off election in a month or two between him and the candidate that came in second.

I'm not sure if this is the same guy but I saw an interview with him and he definitely came across as more nationalist than anything.

Yeah, I've heard thae argument that he's actually a right wing nationalist before also, however his economic and social views seem to be similar to those of Chavez.

As far as I know, the election has not ended yet though Humala is currently leading in the elections.

i saw a thing about the Peruvian elections on TV, and whilst Humala is said to model his ideas around those of Chavez, a member of the Socialist Party who was interviewed said that he wasnt particularly similar to Chavez, besides being anti-US imperialism, and was certainly more of a nationalist than socialist. Still an anti-US Pres in South America cant be too bad a thing, and its a furthering of this anti-US trend that has become increasingly popular in South America recently.

I would still argue that his election would be good for the peruvian working class and wold strngthen the Peruvian labour movment.

I’ve done a lot of research on this guy. He seems like one to keep an eye on. For one it appears the socialist youth in Peru don't seem to like this guy very much, in fact they go as far is to call him a Fascist. His mother believes that homosexuals should be shot and he has already stated that he is not a socialist. He also allowed torture to be used on the Shinning Path rebels while in the military. Nationalism is iffy, he seems to be very strong on nationalism but wants to work with Evo and Chavez and Castro.

Chavez wouldn't allow a Fascist nationalist take place in South America so I'm sure he has his eye on this guy too. He says he's one for the people, and that he wants to get ride of foreign companies that are taking advantage of Peru, I don't see anything wrong with this, its what Castro, Chavez, Evo, and all the other leftists who came to power in Latin America are promoting.

We just have to watch out and see what side his nationalism takes a lean on to, hopefully more than likely it develops into socialism. But I just don't know what to make of this right now.
