I just thought I'd share my success story!

I've been having nothing but trouble getting rent reciepts for an appartment that I lived in last year. I went through weeks and weeks of arguing with the landlord, and in the end, he told me that I wasn't getting shit.

I told him that I'd "get my lawyer" and take him to court (as if I have a lawyer!), and he said fine, he'd get his lawyer and see me there.

So last week, I went to the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal (on the advice of a friend) and got a hearing scheduled, then sent him the subpoena (yeah dawg!). And this was all free of charge (although the OHRT does charge for some services).

The landlord just called me today, and told me that I'm getting reciepts, finally!, without going to court, AND before the April tax deadline!!!

I never thought I'd say this, but holy shit, the system works!!!
:D

Anyway, I'd encourage anyone renting (I've been renting for years, but have never had a problem like this) to know their rights, and know that they have resources available to them (in Ontario anyway). If I hadn't been told about the OHRT, I know that I'd surely be on the losing side of this battle.

Anyway, today is a good day :D

The tribunal is more or less set up to work for landlords, but in your case there was no way they could argue that your landlord was not wrong.

A good thing to know about ORHT is that they usually have duty council, and if you go early during the day, you can get them to look through the guidlines and find loopholes for you, whatever the trouble.

I once went 6 months without paying any rent, thanks to a loophole. My landlord sent me the tribunal eviction notice via courier. The rules say they have 4 days after the date of filing, but it she waited over a day to send it, and consequently I recieved it on the fifth day.

Therefor they squashed it and she had to file over again (in the end she won, but by the time the sherrif came 6 months later we left).

I am glad to hear of your success. Rent is too damn expensive these days (it pretty much costs the same as mortgaging a house!). I am still stuck in my parents' house (I am saving up a "nest egg" at the moment). :(

You were lucky, here in Quebec, the land lords actually sleep with the Rental Housing Tribunal. I lost a case about the fact we had to pay for the week the building got fumigated due to an infestation coming from the basement and we all had to vacate the building.
