You CAN plug your guitar in your stereo, but it's very likely you'll ruin your equipment... the pre-amp on the tape deck was designed for an different input voltage level and impedance... an high voltage input from your guitar will probably burn the power-amp transistors!

There are several things you can do, depending on what (if any) technical experience/money you have at your disposal. Is this just a joke though, because I am tired and don't particuarly want to waste my time.

No I picked up a Fender Squire Strat for free and didn't have an amp, so my dad suggested using the amp in the tape deck and speakers that we have, plugged it in, it made a loud noise now it doesn't work.

I am surprised you had a 1/4 inch input to plug it in by.

Chances are you have blown an output transistor on your system; depending on what it is it might be worth getting it repaired. Unless of course it is a valve based system (which I doubt) but if it was, it is not as likely that the guitair would have blown it.

Did you plug into a mic input by any chance? Pre amps for mics aren't really suitable for guitars, but it is possible that the system couldn't handle the output (hence my guess that this is what has gone on it).

You probably could get something sorted from what you have at home, try the forums on guitar.com perhaps, they gave me quite a bit of technical advice when I started out.

picked up a proper 2nd hand fender amp.
It is an old stero (early 60's) probably couldn't get it repairde if we wanted it to.
Ye the there is a mic/input thing on it, and we tried that and that is what killed it.
