Everyday Anarchy

I'm looking for some credible sources that show the affects a person's income has on their academic life. I'm certain that students with a lower income are more likely to fail in schools or receive less encouragement, but unfortunately I have no proof.
If anybody has any links or titles of books that can help me, I'd really appreciate it.
I mentioned the other day to my mom that I think the poorer students would be the ones most likely to score lower grades (and it appears so at my school, too), but she dismissed the idea with "Money and education have nothing to do with each other."
Thanks.
