Since Ive been exiled to this hole for being such an asshole I have no other choice than to put topics like this here...but yeah maybe the cappies here will have some interesting views on this.
While several weeks ago the Dutch government had nothing but bad words about their last outpost of Dutch imperialism now there is a "pre Falkland war" sentiment. "The socialist dictator (since when are democratically elected presidents automatically dictators?) wants to conquer our last remaining colonies!!!" is what the media is whining at the moment.
The early 80s in Argentina were marked by a conflict known as the Falkland Wars. Argentina decided to take over the Falkland Island, one of the few remains of the former British Empire. Eventhough these islands were nothing but a few humps of rock with no real value to Great Britian, the British military set up an entire military campaign to "liberate" these islands from the Argentine invaders.
If we take a look at the political situation of the UK in that time we could see that Tatcher and her government were quite unpopular, the masses were tired of this "I am Lady" figure and her conservative ranting. However a war like this has a typical effect on the people, similar to football games it creates a feeling of solidarity and it didnt come as a surprise that this war was the best thing that could have happened to Tatcher (similar to how the September 11 attacks on New York were a godsend gift for George W. Bush). The following elections ended up in a major victory for Tatcher and her henchmen.
How does this relate to our current situation between Venezuela and The Netherlands? Well the current Dutch government of right wing, conservative Christians who represent the elites of society has reached a new level of inpopularity. The local elections have proven that the left wing parties will be the major winners were there to be governmental elections now. What better way to have the masses as a single front behind to than to have a war against an aggressor like Hugo Chavez right? Wouldnt it be bliss for the Dutch government is Chavez did actually attack....

The article is mine, I wrote it as a response to what I saw on the news about the Dutch minister of defense suggesting Chavez might want to attack the Dutch Antilles.

Without any prior knowledge of the situation; would it be in the interests of the people living in these Dutch posessions to stay Dutch ? would they want to ? Would this Chavez character be better for them ?
I think when tiny 'outpost' colonies that wouldn't be viable as indepedent states anyways speak the language of the european power rather then the local powers, have no real natural resources, and a population that would vote to remain a colony in any election, in those cases i think they may as well just be best left alone. It would be wrong for instance for Gibraltar to be forced to join Spain when they speak English and always vote against changes in their status. The same is even more true for French overseas departments (which are annexes of France not colonies).
I dont' know anything about the Dutch Antilles though so whether its more a situation like that or whether its different i don't know.

Yes it's a situation similar to that. They want to be part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but they want more autonomy. So I think we should give them what they democratically want.
Bet fernando, you have been exiled to the Antilles? From Netherlands?

He means he got restricted to "Opposing Ideologies", which is why he's posting it here.
Anyway, of course it's all much ado about nothing.

Well the idea of living there does sound very interesting...better climate better mentality.

Some would consider a remark like that pro-imperialist and reactionary, however I see what you mean! If the Antilles and Aruba would gain independence I think a large part of the population would move to Holland, a similar thing happened to Surinam when it gained its indepedence.

Chavez wants to invade Netherland Antilles? are you kidding me? that is just some wacko dutch christian, sort of like our own Pat Robertson..this is some dutch Pat Robertson figure speculating, i don't think it's in Chavez's own interest to take such actions, and im sure he isn't THAT crazy to such a thing, wtf is he going to gain anyways? plus, trust me the people of the dutch antillies, im sure don't wanna separate from their mother country, Netherlands.

No, this isn't just some religious whack, it's a minister. Not in the religious sense, but as in an American "secretary of state". The particular Dutch ministers who have been speaking up about this are the Defence minister, and the Foreign Affairs minister.

I thought the controversy was over the fact that the Dutch let the US military use the airports on the Antilles for operations in Colombia, the US has demanded that Venezuela allow their aircraft to fly over Venezuelan airspace whenever they want, without prior permission, which the Venezuelan government has rightfully refuse to allow.
