Where in the Qu'ran does it permit this sexist behaviour we see so frequently in hardline Muslim states? I'm interested.

Women in the Quran (http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/quran/women/long.html)

However, the Qu'ran isn't the reason that "hardline Muslim states" are sexist, rather it is the main rationale for the sexism in these places.

At some point, when these places develop to a sufficient level, we will see a strong feminist movement emerge in the Middle East which will attack Islam....ferociously.

There are signs, incidentally, that this is starting to happen in Iran....the youth culture there seems to be heading towards a confrontation with the Mullahs and in the course of this confrontation, Islam will take a battering! :D

Fascinating. Thank you very much. Any articles about these 'signs'? I would be much obliged.

No problem. :)

As for the "signs", well....they've mainly come from short reports in the mainstream news that have discussed the underground youth movement in Iran. However, I also found this for you....

Iran a place where a defeated 1979 revolution has been labelled an Islamic revolution by official journalism; an Iran, which has been a pillar of political Islam over the past two decades is now today at the crossroads of a social, political and cultural upheaval against Islam and political Islam and for humanism, secularism and modernism.

Why are women freely (if that is the case) joining organisations which oppress them?
