Get the feeling you'll never understand Latin American politics? Me, too!

I'd compare this to Yassar Arafats 'cracking down' on Palstinian militants. Purely for show.
I hope so anyway. The last thing the Latin American left needs now is disunity. The enemy is clear. Regaldess of borders or ideological differences, Its time for Latin America to really confront US imperialism.

The article is mixing the events.
First of all the enemies that our troups battled are still UNKNOWN. The term guerilla was used as an example. But given the fact that the ones attacking us have been the AUC (fascist paramiliteries),"border pirates" and colombian troups with suposed american advisors, the guerrilla theory seems wrong. The venezuelan version of these news cleary state that all posibilities were open, that's a big diference from saying they were fighting guerrillas.
These battles are not suprising giving the fact that the venezuelan border has been crozed by diferent forces in the past month and many gun battles have taken place.
Another thing to renember is that in the past month unknown groups based in Colombia have murdered venezuelan peasants. In his weekly adress Chavez said he would take actions If another attack like this took place. He urged the guerrillas not to take part in any such actions. So that would leave the paramileteries especially since they have more control over the boder region than the guerrillas have.
Two key things to undestand are that some guerrilla units don't fight at all for the revolution they behave more like warlords than guerrillas. they are known for kidnapping civilians and providin "insurance" for the people in other worls a weekly salary for not attacking your pueblo. These corrupt units can't even be controled by the guerrillas leaders sometimes they even fight other units. If that was the case then isn't much to say only that the goverment did what It had to do.
The other thing is that sometimes the "border pirates" who are basicly mercenarys for hire do their terrorist attacks while imporsenating guerrillas. This has hapened before and It could hava also been the case.
Last but not least the venezuelan goverment has never folowed the right wing goverments of Colombia and the US on calling the guerrillas "terrorists" or taking part in the WAR agaisnt "terrorism".More than once our goverment has expresed that the guerrillas are not an enemy. We only say that If we are attaked by anyone we will defend ourselves.Nothing has change in our political management.

Likewise thanks, GB.
Also, I'm starting to get a little bit skeptical of V-headlines...some of the things they print are, well, strange.
