View Full Version : Bill Maher - Pretty smart for a mainstream pundit

Bill Maher said something on his HBO show last week I found rather interesting. He's been against this war from the outset, so I pay attention to what he has to say. Maybe others will agree. Speaking in reference to stamping out terrorism and the fact that half (yes, half) the American military is in our near Iraq, he used this analogy:
If you're driving down the road, and you see 20 cops driving past you going down the road going the opposite direction; and even if you're normally a law abiding citizen, don't you immediately think "Wow, I could knock over that 7-11 right now and..."?
Just wondered if I was the only one this logic appealed to.

He's smart, and makes some good points. However I have heard him make some pretty incredibly insensitive remarks about other cultures, especially in relation to Islam and Afghanistan. I guess he does it for the shock value more than anything, though.
When it comes down to it he's an American nationalist with some liberal ideas.

Yeah, somehow I think that he was just trying to get attention when he said the stuff about how the U.S. was more cowardly than the terrorists...which i don't neccesarily disagree with... but anyway what did he say about islam and afghanistan?

his show politically incorrect got cancelled after 9-11 when he said something like "yeah, what the terrorists did was cowardly but so is bombing another country from 4,000 miles away."

He has a tendancy to side with the hardliners in the Sharon government. Not only that, but ever since 9/11 he encouraged and espoused the view that the conflict in Afghanistan that resulted can and should be charecterized as a war against Islam. He has a tendency to sound like a little bit of a fruit cake from time to time, but he's the only mainstream talk show host I know of speaking out against the war.
