I don't find it funny. I just think it's a cheap imitation of the Simpsons. The humour is childish, overly obvious, and purile. Admittedly so is the Simpsons, but at least the characters are appealing. In Family Guy, the characters are just not likeable. Even the opening song is annoying and it lacks the classy edge of the Simpsons one.

It's fine if you're pubescent, but it seems to be popular with loads of people at the moment. WHY?

I used to watch the simpons...when I was 14.

Family guy is way better, simpsons humor is outdated crap.

Explain what you find funny about this. I never laugh when I watch it. But I laugh at most comedy.

The imitations of other shows and movies, the absurdity, pretty much how good comedy has to be to be funny.

If the phrase over-rated didn't already exist Family Guy would have neccessated its invention

I appreciate what it tries to do, but I never laugh out loud at it. It does not engender any hilarity in me whatsoever. For the other shows and movies and sometimes adverts I recognise the reference but its not funny, maybe that's because I don't find spoofs and references funny...anyway I don't think this is a prerequisite of good comedy. As for the absurdity, I agree spontaneous 'random' humour can be great but in Family Guy it is of a type that I really don't find funny. It always feels staged. It's either too obvious or too abstract, and it lacks originality or quaint touches to give it character in my opinion. As for its satirical elements, they've been done time and time again by other shows, like the Simpsons.

I put this thread up because all my friends love this and they can't stand me not laughing at it when they invite me over to watch it. It seriously pisses them off. I mean, I laugh at all the other stuff they watch, but this, I don't know, I just don't understand the appeal. It's very odd. I feel like an oddball, because this seems so popular...that's why I'm interested in seeing what people really find funny about it.

Just to give you a sense of what I really like, and laugh at, here are a few examples of my favourite shows:
Fawlty Towers
Monty Python
Alan Partridge
The Office
Big Train

I like Family Guy because I find it funnier than The Simpsons, probably due to it being more adult than The Simpsons and a much better commentry on current society whereas The Simpsons comments on the early 90s.
I agree that Fawlty Towers, Monty Python and Alan Partridge are funny, I've never seen Big Train, However I absolutely detest The Office because Ricky Gervais is one of the biggest dickheads I've ever seen on television.

I actually thought the Simpsons was more adult then Family Guy but they were a little more subtle about it so a lot of people didn't pick up stuff that was funny.

The reason why a lot of people like Family Guy now is because the Simpsons sucks now. I wish the show would get bettter but it doesn't :(

I watched a new episode of The Simpsons yesterday, when the family get stuck in a cave and Lisa tells a story about Burns, Moe, Snake and that Texan dude.

It sucked.

Family Guy is new and hilarious.

seriously what is wrong with you people, are you serious. firstly to say that family guy is funnier than the simpsons is ridiculous, Family Guy is toilet humour nothing more. The simpsons 1st seasonis better than the "funniest" family guy season. How can you all say family guy is hilarious and say that the simpsons isnt funny, the place in the brain that makes something funny must be out of wack in you. Family Guy is a failure, granted season had its moments, but every season just takes off the previous ones, no originality. I saw a new simpsons episode last night, where Springfield was going to get a football stadium and so forth, and i couldnt find many if any things that were taken from past episodes, as well that it was a hilarious episode. Still maintaining originality after all these years. I guess the creators of family guy just dont hold that creative talent the simpsons people do.

I enjoy watching Family Guy, for the most part, more than The Simpsons (when I am watching for the first time). However, The Simpsons provides, for me at least, much more enjoyment when it comes to multiple viewings. The newest season of The Simpsons, in my opinion, has been quite funny.

I admit that The Simpsons at its best was funnier, but the new stuff is pants.

I think that Family Guy has gone downhill as well. It just doesn't seem as funny as it used to be. Also, the newer show American Dad is practically just a copy of Family Guy (even with the talking animal). Either way, I prefer The Simpsons to both of them as I find it to be quite witty and comical.

I just borrowed the second season of family guy from the library and it sucked. Sure there for some funny parts, i like all the bits where they mock other TV shows and movies, but not much of the rest was laugh out loud funny, i'd rather watch old simpsons episodes. And don't get me started on American Dad! Ugh, i think i'd rate oldish simpsons as the best, followed by Futurama.

I find it amusing when people take personal preference so seriously. I find something funny, you don't. Good to know, can we move on?

In any case, I like the pop-culture references in Family Guy, as well as the parodies and general over-the-top elements of the show.

Family Guy uses completely irrelevant and absurd situations to be funny. It's what most people call bad screenplay writting.

omigod! that was so random, i love Family Guy!!

Family Guy is written by a Seth McFarlane, and Family Guy use to be a cult show, which only a few individuals watched, and didn't gain any recognition until recently.

Family Guy is one of my favorite shows, just because I find it funny, I mean yea it's random, and absurd, but I mean is that not what comedy is about? I mean sure all comedy shows could resort back to Shakespearean comedy, to satisfy people who think it's "to dumb," but what's the fun in that? If I want something intellectual, I would flip back to the History Channel (which is my all time favorite channel), when it's done. Just because a show uses "dumb," humor doesn't make it not funny. You like it or you don't, comedy isn't meant to make everyone laugh.

When the first season of "Family Guy" was on television, I saw it as simply a poor imitation of "the Simpsons". When they began airing it on Adult Swim, I found it much more entertaining.

THe Simpsons has much smarter and sharper satire (only the Daily Show/Colbert Report come close to that level of social satire on TV) but "Family Guy" is like PG-13 Lonney Toons with a much faster pace and much more absurd charaters.

I prefer King of the Hill.

Never really understood the big deal with neither The Simpsons nor Family Guy.

Truthfully though...I'm not a fan of cartoons or any sort of animation...

I enjoy it for the most part. Stewie makes the whole show.

Not my favorite cartoon but it still makes me laugh. The Simpsons is better and lately I've really been enjoying the Boondocks. Anyone see the episode where Riley teams up with the painting guy from PBS to do graffiti?

I also enjoy Duckman, the Critic and Futurama.

Seriously, Family guy isn't even all that funny, its plots are interchangable and the humor isn't even all that clever. On top of that, Family Guy is a generic version of the Simpsons. I'll admitt that the Simsposn haven't beent hat funny over the last three years, but overall Family Guy can't touch the Simpsons.

Phalanx
13th April 2006, 17:06
You just got that from South Park. Family Guy is awesome, and even if the jokes are interchangeable, they're still funny. Random humor is great, just like sophisticated humor, you need a little of both.

But Alan Partridge owns all.

South Park is right on that aspect. That show is much funnier than Family guy also, as is the Boondocks.

Exactly, but I think it's still funny, and so do other people.

South Park has the same plot also, the kids are confronted with a moral dilemma, and they must convince the adults of the town/nation of their opinion of the matter. It happens with every show.

But I find Family Guy hilarious. I just think it is funny because it is too obvious, and just... crazy and random. I laugh my ass-off when I watch Family Guy.
American Dad is also funny.

And when that happens I watch family guy its a fantastic show, just the complete randomness of the whole program is great!

The show is extremely formulaic. the writing is terrible with just repeated cutaway scenes of some inane popculture reference--that or a fart joke.

also, seth mcfarland steals a lot of his material. example:

Mighty Boosh is genius. But I do enjoy Family Guy, although it is essentially a adult verion of the Simpsons. But The Simpsons these days is lame. I can't actually see the jokee in it really.
