I have heard of people claiming that they have "taught themselves" foreign languages. Just what excactly does this mean? Did they spend a lot of time around others that speak other languages? Are there books and such you can use yourself, of which actually work? Is there any kind of way to become fluent in foreign languages without going to college courses?

There are many good "language teacher" computer programs to be found here on the internet, for free. :)
It's quite an easy and fun method. Perhaps live teachers will soon be a feature of the past?
Look for such programs on http://www.download.com/. There should be hundreds.

I tried once to use one of those "ten days" learning books, all you get is Thanks..good morning..how are you..im fine..good bay..and numbers from 1 to 10 in any language!! :D
Then i tried CDs and it was much better...but thats not enough (to me), i'm going to take some classes i think that's my last option!

If you are really committed to learning a language, immerse yourself in it as much as possible. Use tapes, workbooks, phrasebooks and everything else too (the more the better) - but you definitely need to have regular conversations in the language.

Find someone who speaks the language and live with them. And sleep with them.
And try and talk in only the language that you wish to learn. Get the person to say everything twice, once in the language you are trying to learn, then only if you don't understand, in English (or your native tounge).
