Gift Economy traditionally relies on an altruistic mindset, from what I have been told. However, anarchism advocates a direct transition to communism. Capitalism to altruism? That seems difficult? So, what I am wondering is whether there are Gift Economies that encourage self interest over collective interest while ensuring that people work together. In a sense, a transition or alternative system to complete altruism - one where people working together is actually in their immediate best interest.

Has anyone wrote on Gift Economy in depth or proposed something like this?

A gift economy does not REQUIRE altruism. It is possible to be self-interested and still practice a gift economy because when one gives freely, he can expect to receive from others freely. Hell, Egoists themselves consider altruism to be the highest form of Egoism possible.
