Fire Destroys a Landmark Chicago Church Famed for Gospel Music

By JODI WILGOREN and MONICA DAVEY

CHICAGO, Jan. 6 - A raging blaze Friday afternoon quickly destroyed the 115-year-old Pilgrim Baptist Church, an architectural and cultural landmark in this city's Bronzeville neighborhood that is renowned as the historic home of gospel music.

Investigators could not determine the fire's cause Friday, but officials said their focus was on roof repairs under way shortly before the flames erupted about 3 p.m. The church janitor, who escaped unscathed, said he was the only person inside the building when the fire broke out; two firefighters sustained minor injuries from smoke and debris.

Church members and neighborhood residents stood vigil for hours on blocks filled with black smoke, staring in shock at the charred hole where so much history had happened, as preservationists throughout the city joined in the mourning.

Deemed a city landmark in 1981, the South Side church was significant not only for its role in African-American musical and religious history, but as one of the last remaining, defining works of the legendary Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan built the structure in 1891 as a synagogue with his partner Dankmar Adler, whose father was the congregation's rabbi; a young draftsman named Frank Lloyd Wright worked on the project.

The architect they refer too, Louis Sullivan, is, if I'm not mistaken, the man credited with being the inventor of the skyscrapers of today, but in all fairness, this Church was really fucking ugly....

It is fortunate that a lot of these old churches are real fire traps.

I had occasion once to talk with some electricians who were working on New Orleans' famous St. Louis Cathedral (the one you see in pictures of Jackson Square). It was built in 1851 and apparently wired for electricity around 1910!

The electricians said they did what they could...but they never knew what was going to happen when throwing the main power switch on. :o

It will certainly be a pleasure to see that rococo monstrosity burn to the ground. :D

Personally I like old churches - especially the mainland European ones that are the only buildings to have survived centuries of wars, plagues and bandits - but I agree that this one was as ugly as sin! (no pun intended).

For some reason this was actually big news. I don't know why. Anyways, old news.

Where is their god now?

I mean honestly, I'm pretty sure it isn't a good sign for your faith when "God's House" is crumbling to the ground from faulty wiring.

really? I didnt hear about it on the major nightly news :D

On the other hand, I did hear on local news about a pastor getting mugged and beaten. He was in the hospital and his church was "praying for him". They "knew" god was there when he was downgraded from the er to a regular hospital room.

I remember it being in the papers and on the TV. Of course I live near Chicago, sot it was bigger around me. I do remeber it making the front page of the Chicago Tribune.
