I cannot get a confirmation on this. What was the source of McCarthy's power? Was he the leader of the House of Unamerican Activities, a similiar organization, or just a manipulative senator?

Yes, I saw the movie, but it is difficult to tell if all of it is accurate.

Yes it is very accurate. Joseph McCarthy was a senator.

Yeah, the movie is pretty accurate as far as the "on screen" stuff... much of the film footage was simply lifted straight from the real thing and Ed Morrow's speeches in the movie were taken word-for-word from the TV show.
I think when we are talking about McCarthy, it is important to recognize that the communist witch hunts went much further than the HUAC or a handful of Senators. Union leaders purged radical rank and file members and in effect purged all political discussion from within unions... hey if you disagree with the leadership's cooperation with the bosses, maybe you're a dirty commie which violates your loyalty oath and you'll be kicked out of the union and loose your job.
