WB provides 60 mln USD for Nepal's higher education

The World Bank (WB) has agreed to provide 60 million US dollars to Nepal for the Second Higher Education Project 2006, (SHEP, 2006) organized by the University Grants' Commission (UGC), a senior government official said here Saturday.

"Education development should be able to address the unemployment problem in the country rather than creating a huge gap between the economically deprived and the well-off," Minister for Education and Sports Krishna Mainali told reporters.

According to the minister, the strategic goals of SHEP are: improving quality and financial sustainability of community campuses, improving access of meritorious and needy students to higher education.

Mainali said that the development in education sector should not be hampered, no matter which party is in power.

According to the UGC, of the total 60 million dollars, around 40 million dollars will be spent as reform grants and research funding sub-components, 4 million dollars will be used for Students' Financial Assistance, 13 million dollars for higher secondary education and 3 million dollars for a Strengthening Systemic Capacity, that is to start this year.

Red Heretic: From the thread title, I get the impression you disagree with this statement by Mainali.

Is that right? If so, does this position apply to other countries than Nepal? Are you generally in favor of the imperialist countries imposing economic sanctions on Third World countries based on their political regimes?

(The World Bank is an implement of the imperialist countries, esp the U.S.)
