WB provides 60 mln USD for Nepal's higher education
The World Bank (WB) has agreed to provide 60 million US dollars to Nepal for the Second Higher Education Project 2006, (SHEP, 2006) organized by the University Grants' Commission (UGC), a senior government official said here Saturday.
"Education development should be able to address the unemployment problem in the country rather than creating a huge gap between the economically deprived and the well-off," Minister for Education and Sports Krishna Mainali told reporters.
According to the minister, the strategic goals of SHEP are: improving quality and financial sustainability of community campuses, improving access of meritorious and needy students to higher education.
Mainali said that the development in education sector should not be hampered, no matter which party is in power.
According to the UGC, of the total 60 million dollars, around 40 million dollars will be spent as reform grants and research funding sub-components, 4 million dollars will be used for Students' Financial Assistance, 13 million dollars for higher secondary education and 3 million dollars for a Strengthening Systemic Capacity, that is to start this year.
