Hey guys,

I need to debate the following motions tommorow at a competition, so i'm going to list them all and hope a few people show their opinions and debate so I can get proposition and opposition arguments.

Resources and links appreciated.

Allow over 16s to drink alcohol legally.
Put condom machines in school toilets.
Make public transport free.
Let Turkey join EU
Legalise hunting (UK)
ban smoking in pubs (UK)
reintroduce the death penalty
Switch to nuclear power

On the day we will only be arguing two of these but we don't know which, so I have to have a for and against argument. It's tommorow (friday!) so all help is appreciated.

Please debate, so i can get more ideas and notes :D

I'm in England so some of these may not apply to everyone.

Noah.

these are my HUMBLE opinions

Allow over 16s to drink alcohol legally.

No! Social pressure practically removes the choice in the first place - They are too immature, too self conscious and too governed by "what everyone else is doing".

maybe, if they were more independently minded.

Put condom machines in school toilets.

Yes! Most teenagers are sexually active. if there are proper supervision on school premises to avoid some "hookey" in the jax - allow it.

Make public transport free.

Yes! - if financially viable.

Let Turkey join EU

No! Virtual military dictatorship (from what I heard).

Legalise hunting (UK)

NEVER. Leagalise the hunting of the hunter. Shoot them 'pompus' bastards down.

Cruelty is not acceptable. Hunting foxes for sport is not acceptable.

ban smoking in pubs (UK)

Yes! Worked wonders here in ireland, with very little "havock". People accepted the law very easy.

reintroduce the death penalty

No! - not under the control of the bourgeois.

Switch to nuclear power

NO! - switch to solar, tidal and wind. Britain is one of the best places in the world for potential wind power.
Nuclear creates hazardous waste (although I understand new methods could stop this)

Sorry for such a rough post, really short on time!!! :D

(I'm in England aswell).

Allow over 16s to drink alcohol legally.

General maturity issues again, as with the previous poster. These kinds of laws have to be general, as they can't be both logistically manageable and subjective. The current drinking age is about right I think.

Put condom machines in school toilets.

Yes, honestly, encourage children to have sex earlier ! Why not put prostitutes into school toilets ? Honestly, more and more openness about sex just leads to more of it when it isn't needed.

Make public transport free.

Could be a good idea, if it was feasible financially, and over-crowding (like in London for example) wasn't going to become an issue.

Let Turkey join EU

Take Britain out of the EU, then let the europeans screw up their countries all they like, they don't need to drag Britain down into a morass of politically correct, liberalist legal crap (the EU constitution), The rest of the world can get along fine with Britain.
(trading-wise and all that I mean, the EU is just an attempt at a new power-bloc, soviet style, but without the good music and tank-armies).

Turkey herself also doesn't fit the current agenda of the EU, it's just not a very nice place to have around, despite how inclusive and 'tolerant' we're all supposed to be.

Legalise hunting (UK)

Why not ? as long it's controlled at not just the sole reserve of the Duke of Westminster. Theres nothing wrong with a spot of shooting in a controlled environment, it can really allay a lot of frustrations.

ban smoking in pubs (UK)

Good idea, I like to drink, I don't like the idea of my lungs turning black inside of me, end of.

reintroduce the death penalty

Yes. Some people cannot be re-habilitated, and should be taken from life, so that they don't waste another penny of the tax-payers money. I hate the thought that my taxes are in part supporting paedophiles and mass murderes in a life better than a lot of my family have.

Switch to nuclear power

Why not ? It's clean, efficient, doesn't destroy the landscape with the thousands of other devices that would otherwise be needed. A handful of big, well-managed nuclear power stations could easily power all of Britain. The waste issue really isn't an issue, there are ways of processing and storing it so that it eventually breaks down.

I persume we are talking about teenagers?

They are having sex anyway, the media does enough 'encouraging', society has broken free from religious constraints - THEY WILL HAVE SEX.

Why not protect them in any way possible.

Well "ally" those fucking frustrations on a bus shelter, or some rich fuckers car - Not take the live of an innocent.

Hunting is BRUTAL, VICIOUS and UNCIVILISED.

The bourgeois bastards would hang anyone who challenges their state, labeling them as "terrorists".

In the past, a lot of common illnesses were said could not be re-habilitated - we now know so many of what they called mad, phycho (or whatever) can be helped and re-habilitated.

How long does it take to break down?

Fair enough, just so long as it doesn't encourage the younger ones.

I'd call smashing up a bus shelter uncivilised myself. Shooting a gun is far more controlled. Anyway, things could be bred to be hunted, like things are bred for farming.

Still, it saves money just to hang them eh ? Also makes the victims feel better. Especially if it's in public. I have no time for certain types of scum.

How long does it take to break down?

A few thousand years I think

Allow over 16s to drink alcohol legally.

Yes. People that are capable of understanding the risks of their actions should be allowed to do whatever they want with their body. 16 year olds are certainly able to understand the implications of alcohol consumption.

Put condom machines in school toilets.

Yes. Not providing condoms to people doesn't mean they won't have sex. Provide the condoms everywhere for as cheap as possible (preferrably for free), educate people on how to use them and other types of contraceptives, and sex in general, and you'll be set.

Make public transport free.

Yes. Of course, under the capitalist system, this means paying it through taxes. Everyone has the right to travel. Nobody should be limited to their location. I believe Publius posted something on the right to travel a while ago when we were talking about driver's licenses.

ban smoking in pubs (UK)

No. People should realize that there will be smoking there when they go. The people that work there aren't forced to work there.

reintroduce the death penalty

No. Under the capitalist judicial system, this is a disaster. I don't have the figures with me, but a very significant percentage are purported to be innocent.

Nuclear power?

Yes. Although I am more of a fan of solar power, any alternative to fossil fuels will be a step in the right direction. The safety of these plants are very often questioned; however, those doing the questioning have absolutely no knowledge of the safety mechanisms in place. I would suggest researching the safety of these plants and the waste output of each one.

Allow over 16s to drink alcohol legally.

No. Not until American culture has changed to view alcohol as nothing more than a relaxing after work type of pleasure, rather than a drink as much as you can to get bombed with friends and then go out joy riding. There are enough deaths resulting from drunk driving from adults let alone what we now consider minors.

Put condom machines in school toilets.

Yes, condoms in elementary school toilets. (Inside the bowls)

Make public transport free.

Charge what they charge now but run all public transport (that uses diesel) on biodiesel.

Let Turkey join EU

Sure, why not. (lol)

Legalise hunting (UK)

No, there is no sport in charging down a fox while on horse back with a pack of overexcited little dogs snarling at the fox's heals.

ban smoking in pubs (UK)

This is a difficult one. Why not smoke outside though?

reintroduce the death penalty

What? Death by fire ants and death by starving golden retrievers would be fairly hilarious. Actually that's kind of sick but this question confused me.

Switch to nuclear power

Nuclear power scares me.
