This is an unexpected turn of events, is it not. The people who have been fighting Russia for 3 years have voted to be a recongized part of the Russian Federation. Of course I believe it is probaly a search for peace, and whatever is made out of this referendum (96.1 for, 2.6 against) will be lost within a year.

Irish voters in the free state voted to remove the historic claim to the 6 counties from the constitution. that don't mean Irish voters want the 6 counties to remain in the UK. 85% favour the 32 county state.

i'd suggest the same is happening here. a desperate cry for peace rather than the Chechen people wanting to stay in Russia.

i also question just about every Russian election. they have long been the dodgyist country in the world be it with the KGB running things or the Mafia. or both! they have a long way to go to shed there shady practices.

I think I read something about this election on usatoday.com 3,000 and some voters out of an eligable 430,000 actually voted

aaaaaarrrgh! Don't make me start a Just Joe and Kapitan Andrey thread! :biggrin: (although this has been going on for just as long.

Anyway, I heard that the gov't says there was an 85% turnout for the election, despite the fact that a huge amount of Chechnya's intended to boycott the vote. This isn't going to make peace. Is it?
