Very bored tonight, little to do but play Bass.

I play Electric Bass and I was just wondering if anyone else did. Any cool tabs/ melodies or even scales you have? I've got a couple of ear tabs for different song which I think work pretty well

My favourite Bassist would have to be either Timmy C from RATM or Brian Baker from Minor Threat although the Bassist who's lines and technique I respect the most would be Les Claypool.

I play a cheap Cruiser, cost about £120 and it's my first bass (I've only been playing for about 4 months so excuse my noobishness), it's a bit of a plank but it's actually got a decent tone.

Even general chat about instruments would be cool.

Just play some Red Hot Chili Peppers stuff...well you might not like them (I dunno) but Flea's basslines are cool! Havent got any tabs and those online things...well 9 out of 10 times they are filled with flaws which are majorly fucked up!

Yeah  Flea's lines are brilliant but I haven't learnt how to Slap-Pop yet sadly

I keep fucking that up and making my thumb bleed  But yeah a bloody bass is a very rock n roll thing to have :P

Slapping really isn't that hard. If you're just starting out, you should work on scales and sliding and bending. At first it's kind of boring, but once you can put it all together, it sounds great!

If you'd like to write your own bass solos, you should definately learn scales. Not too difficult, it just takes memorization.

Bass players get so much shit, it's funny however I could function without one, being a drummer, I played a gig without one and it was shit, your timing goes out during solos , you just can't play to a lead guitarist.

Our guitarist said something like this:
"This is the general pattern for a magazine artical on a band:
-Singer
-Guitarist
-Drummer
-Producer
-Management
-Road crew
-Groupies
-Roadies
-The bands pet cat
-Bass player."

That was funny yet rather sad.

Funny you say that, Rockfan because the band I had was only 2 people. It was me and my drummer and I played guitar and sang. He kept his timing pretty good and didn't screw up.

Rockfan
17th March 2006, 04:58
Yeah but when he's improvising his solo and theres a time signature change in there it kind of fucks you up a bit.

just do drunk rock then, as in guitarist plays one chord endlessly and the drummer passes out

XD Nice one.

Oh and Rockfan I was wondering, what does the "signature time change" mean? I dont know too much about music (yet I'm pretty damn good at it ).

Rockfan
17th March 2006, 05:23
Hahahaha, na I'ed rather fuck up while he shreads.

Well most music is written in 4/4 (4 beats in the bar on 1/4 note value) time signature, prity much anything you just start playing unless you concinssly make a decision not to will be in 4/4. And one of our songs switchs from 4/4 to 12/8 (12 beats in 1/8 note time) jig timing, it's quite strange but sounds fucking cool, with a bass player I might add

That's why bassists are always the crazy ones in band that take 2 heroin overdosis in a single night, or destroy everything!

I like to play a little bass, mainly Afro Cuban Tumbaos but I like some Funk & Reggae too and 6/8 Jazz stuff. I'm primarily a percussionist though.

Lol, I haven't known very many bassists to OD relative to singers, guitarists, or drummers. Bassists are usually the mellow ones in the background, that type of personality suits the instrument.

I too am a bassist, though not a praticularily good one. As for what to play, nobody can answer that for you. Just play what you love.

I Play the bass...but I play as much solos as anyone else :P
I got a band where it's just drums synth and bass...and it works out fine :D

I've heard people saying that the bassist just have to stand in the back and look good...i can't say I agree...but that's because i'm so goddamn good (and good-looking by the way :D) :P

I always thought people view the drummer at the bottom as well, depends on the genre I suppose though :P

Slapping and popping is great fun, my scars have just about healed from when my ex-bassist left her bass at mine for a couple of weeks. I am a guitarist by trade, but I do dabble from time to time when I get the chance...

If you play bass you should work on funky walking bass lines, they are just great ;)

For me, the best bassists ever are Roger Patterson (Atheist), Steve DiGiorgio (Death), Steve Malone (Cynic), Tony Choy (Cynic/Atheist), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), Cliff Burton (Metallica), Klaus Floride (Dead Kennedys) and Timmy C (Rage Against The Machine).

Anyone interested in a mixture of latin rythms with metal ones? Just listen to the bass in Atheist. I recommend their last album "Elements".

vox_populi
17th March 2006, 20:31
"Elements" is great.

If you're interested in great bass players listen to:
Lars K. Norberg (Spiral Architect)
John Myung (Dream Theather)
Eric Langlois (Cryptopsy)
Gustav Hjielm (Meshuggah and Pain of Salvation)
Magnus Rosén (Hammerfall, but don't listen to them! Listen to his solo work)
Victor Wooten (Bela fleck and amazing solo work My favourite bassist)
Billy Sheehan (Mr.Big)
Pete Perez (Spastic Ink, My favourite metal bassist)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

And there are alot more :P

And remember the bass is the most important instrument in a band :D

Yeah there are tons of drummers round but shit all bassist, Yeah you can have a band without a guitar and singer but not a bassist and drummer.

When a great drummer and a great bass player really gets in to the groove...that's when magic happens :D

Dyst
17th March 2006, 20:46
I play drums, pretty well I must add. ;)

But I love to play with bassists, especially groovy stuff. Love the rythmic aspect of the instrument, cooperating with drums. :P

Rockfan
17th March 2006, 20:49
Apparently I'm a good drummer (according to other people) but there are no real decent bassists in my town that I know of, I'ed like to do a bit of funk rock but I'm stuck in a metal band lol, oh well 'tis all good.

I played this slow jazzy soul tune a couple of days ago
The drummer and I got into this amazing groove and then after the mandatory guitar solo we decided to let me and the drummer play solo and "answer" eachother
It was the greatest moment in my musical "career". The feeling I got when we played and the feeling I got when afterward really captured what music should be all about...
Pure joy! i felt so relaxed but at the same time really "hyper"

It was just amazing :D

I haven't gigged reguarly for about 2 years now, and gigged at all for several months. The problem is always finding a drummer. They are the bottom of the pile arguably, but they are very rare.

A drummer to me is not just someone that can play a bit, but someone that has a kit, transport, and the time to give up. It also helps if they are over 18, so they can play in more venues.

This typically means someone that has left school, has some cash and talent, and isn't already in one or more bands. This is very rare.

I have given up trying to recruit a band now, and am looking at joining one. I can play blues/rock/metal/funk/country/folk/whatever the fuck gets me gigging again ;)...

I will be moving to the mainland UK in the fall most likely, so if there is anyone in either Nottingham or Liverpool looking for a guitarist you know where to call :P

Of course I could always play bass

I've never played bass in my life, yet when my friend who during the middle of a set decided it was time for a beer hung the bass guitar off me I played and no one could tell the difference

vox_populi

What kind of music did you play?

Ian

hah! It was a hardcore band, but I was doing my best slap bass shit

vox_populi
19th March 2006, 13:16
Hmmm...are you sure that people actually heard what you where playing?

But then again, you just might be a great musician :P

Bass can be the easiest intrument around...but that depends on what music you play...and what ambition you got...

the golden rule of bass is just to stand their and look cool/sleazy, 90% of bass players that jump around look like dicks

Jaco Pastorius and Victor Wooten are the best.

Although I have to say The Lemon Song by Zeppelin has to be one of the coolest bass lines.

G3 is Ingwe Malemsteen, steave Via (freaky facials guy) and Joe Saterani. Thats fucking cool too. I'm not sure of the neme of the Victor Wooten one, but it's shit hot.

Sorry that was a little bit vague...BOW DOWN TO THE AWE INSPIREING BRILLENCE OF MATT FREEMAN!! Matt is the bassist for Rancid and he is fucking amazeing, a prime example would be maxwell murder but all his bass lines are sweet. Seriously the chorus to lock stop and gone is harder then most solos (and theirs a solo on top of that) I seen him twice live and could not belive my eyes either time. If you want diffrent and challengeing music try to follow him down the rabbit hole for a few hours.

Phalanx
16th April 2006, 02:15
Matt Freeman is pretty cool, but he doesn't really branch off.

Even though I don't particularly like Flea, I do respect him in that he tries every type of style and brings his own to the mix. Same with Tim Commerford (Rage) and Vic Wooten.
