View Full Version : Waterproof shoes?

I've noticed in the weather my shoes took a beating (a rather nasty one, bacteria is growing in them because of the humidity ), so I thought about making my own shoes.

I've read in Steal This Book! that shoes could be made from tires, but now-a-days aren't tires made with metals in them so they won't pop easily? That would rule out tires as a component.

But now that I think of it, I would like my shoes to be really water proof (so bacteria won't grow in them). What is a cheap, easy to find material that would accomplish this?

And then, most importantly, how do I make a shoe?

Any help would be appreciated :D

they are not homemade, but army boots do the trick for me, haven't worn a different pair of shoes in years (except for my running shoes), as long as you take care of them (clean them twice a month and rub em with grease), you can stand in water as long as it doesn't come over it

http://www.muckbootsonline.com/jobber_boot.html Holy zomby jesus, $80?!?

For a pair of shoes?!? :o

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy some of that architectural waterproof fabric and make shoes out of those with kevlar soles?

Kevlar is tougher than steel, and the architectural fabric is water resistant up to 350 lbs water per square inch fabric (hell, it could be "hurricane resistant").

And the fabric's weldable

Yeah, but how much time does that take and what is your time worth? Do you know if it will work? How comfortable will they be? etc.

You have to weigh all of that out.

You can find waterproofing solutions. Things like Silicon spray, mink oil, there is also some sort of paste, depends on the type of shoe and what not, i don't know specifics. Check your local shoe store, check camping departmets of stores. Dick's, Walmart (blech), Biggs (Also blech) Bass Pro Shop, other outdoor type stores. Keep in mind, everything is cheap with the five finger discount.

When holes start coming through the back of my shoes I tend to have to by some new shoes because water gets in, lol. I once had to put shopping bags on my feet and then put my feet in the shoes, i felt fucking stupid doin that, and I only did that to go to my local corner shop.

It's best to just by some new shoes if you ask me. I buy a pair of converse lo's and they seem to see me through a whole year and a half.
