pop might be the wrong word to describe this blind couple from Mali... they're more like blues with an African rhythm. They recently released an album, "Dimanche a Bamako", produced by none other than Manu Chao. You can easily hear his influence. I first heard of them on World Cafe on NPR, so I checked them out and I really like it. Just on this latest album, they have two songs which, although are in French, I can make out some social message. One has to do with exalting the solidarity among the people and another has to do with the violence, ignorance, and strife inherent in the system. I might be totaly wrong, since I don't know shit about French. Oh, and like I said, they're blind, which is interesting... I guess. Inspiring maybe.

The great thing about this album is that it has gained worldwide attention for this remarkable couple who have been making exquisite music for years. Their extensive and previously underrated back catalogue is being re-released on the back of Dimanche a Bamako and is well worth seeking out.

If your into the Mali sound Lobi Traore & Ballake Sissoko are also worth a listen.
