sub title says it all- this is perfect at portraying 'us' and 'them'-it draws a line, american and brits are good, arabs and muslims are bad. it portrays the hero (Jack bauer, played by Sutherland) as a valiant defender of american freedom, while the terrorists (always arabs) are the people from team america ("dirka dirka, muhammed jihad")

Perhaps, but its still great entertainment :D Well, the first two series were, I haven't watched the other two (three now I guess) since Sky bought them and put so many bloody commercial breaks in it that its unwatchable. Bastards.
You could say the same thing about all the police programmes on TV in America (I'm sure someone already has on here), but those are great entertainment too. Not so over here in Britain, the only "normal" police programme on TV is the Bill, and in that you can't move for corrupt bastards :P

The bill's pretty good and it's cool that they show bad things the police do also as loveme4whoiam says

Indeed; I don't watch it much myself (it clashes with something but I'm not sure what), but it definitely shows a more realistic side to policing. The majority of police guys are of the "bent, not broken" variety, but you used to get some proper corrupted swine.
The American programmes have muscled out the "normal" police shows over here, we have to do them from an angle - its the 50's, she's a pathologist, she's and extremely elderly lady (WTF?)... Kind of like the police shows from the 70's, where the investigator is always someone with absolutely no reason to be involved in criminal investigation. There was even one about a vicar for Bob's sake!

I saw the first series of 24, intense entertainment. I wonder if anyone has actually tried watching a whole series in a day?

Somewhat interesting, but the sense of urgency is simply emphasized by the clock which gets pretty lame after a while. Besides, if it's in real time than why don't the main characters ever use the bathroom?
From what I have seen and heard of it, it seems that the main character simply runs around and saves the US by eliminating and torturing the villains. The whole series seems to uphold Jack as the go-get-'em American agent whose actions are justified.

Even in a pretty big national German TV guide I read (owned by one of the most reactionary, German right-wing publishers at all), the review of the latest season said it has racist undertones...

I disagree. The terrorists are not always Arab or Muslim, and they don't show that all arabs or muslims are bad.
Regardless, "24" is one of my favorite shows. Even though I want the "bad guys" to win, and most of the time they lose.

Maybe you should try watching something more to your taste... like the Hoobs for example.

Pffft that looks like a cheap Teletubbie rip off. But if they can manage to go two weeks without reusing the same plot device I might try and tune in :P

i actually watched maybe half of this season. anybody else watch it? the president is the villain working with terrorists, and the hero hijacked a plane, so it wasnt all bad. but actually it is. the storyline sucks so bad, bcuz the main device is that jack bauer is always right always correct always does things successfully- what kind of thriller is that? and if he needs any assistance, chloe does it for him on a computer, wtf?

They go during the commercial breaks. The clock continues to tick during the commercials.

ya, not all of the terrorists are muslim or arab, at the end of this season, jack got captured by the japanese. i watch the show because i find it entertaining and, like (* said, i usually want the "bad guys" to win, especially in the season where the turks capture the secretary of defense. But like someone else said, it is really pathetic how jack is always right and everything goes fine, like the season i was just talking about, jack somehow manages to rescue the secretary and his daughter single-handedly and kill 30 or so "terrorists".

I must confess to having watched the first four series in six days.
My flatmate at uni has them all on box set.

In the first season I believe the villains were Serbian.
My dad bought us Season 1 on DVD a year ago and we watched it in a matter of days but after that I haven't gone back to it.

True. Some of the Saturday Night Live parodies concerning this subject are quite funny.
This series seems to give the impression that anyone who messes with the US will get Jack Bauer's boot up their ass and be pistolwhipped by him in the interrogation room. Quite disturbing but I'm sure a lot of Americans love it.
