Is it true that emmigration from Cuba is illegal?
I have heard countless of people making this claim, but I have yet to read it from a trustworthy source.

It's illegal if you don't go through the proper venues and wait until you get a visa.

How hard is to get through the "proper venues" to get a visa?

Depends where you want to go. With the US for instance, they agreed to give alot more visas years ago, but they only give a small percentage of them in practice; which of course like the "Cuban Adjustment Act" (the only act of its kind anywhere in the world, which grants residency to anyone, no matter if they are a criminal or not, who leaves Cuba and reaches the United States in any fashion) is aimed at encouraging people to flee Cuba illegally.

The U.S embassy gives away 20,000 visas a year in Cuba. It's basically a lottery, that's why many choose a to fly directly to other countries or swim to the U.S. Even though it's 20,000 visas you have to be really lucky to get them because of the amount of applicants.

Im rather amused by the US govs stance regarding Cuban immigration and immigration overall...a lil hypocritical if I say so
If Cuban exiles make it onto US land, they can stay in the US as political exiles despite having many free social services (education, healthcare) back in Cuba
But, on the other side of the country, if Mexican/Central American immigrants make it to the US, live and work in the US, and have children in the US - the INS still has the ability to send u back, back to a life of poverty and exploitation
Kinda of a double standard <_<
