the lyrics sound pretty fucking familiar to me...

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
and the world will be as one.

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Seriously, I've been wanting a chance to say:

Perfect Circle's cover version of "Imagine" sucks dead rat through a straw.

It's emo gloom is completely inappropriate to the song. It's like they're saying: Imagine there's no war! Oh no, how awful! I want to kill myself now!

Ian

Severian, I'm willing to bet you don't understand emo, you've never heard of Evergreen or Mineral, so don't use the word. You probably just heard all your friends saying it and thought it was an hilarious thing to say.

You were wrong.

I've only heard a few APC songs, they seem ok, not my thing. But I'm just sick of people using the term emo wrongly.

Punk Rocker
12th March 2006, 07:08
Aight so it was a John Lennon song, fuck off. I remembered the lyrics from somewhere else and thought maybe it was some anarchist thing. But I really don't see how the hell A Perfect Circle is emo.

Counting bodies like sheep is a good song.

Yeah man it's much better, I wonder if it was just another cover though.

How could you not know that Imagine was by Lennon? You officially have no clue about music, you might as well just start learning to beat box now.

So can My Chemical Romance and Simple Plan be classified as emo then?

NO! Learn something.

Can't be bothered reading up about emos...

Then what the fuck are MCR and SP then?
I just asked a dude and he's like:

a person who : wears tight jeans, make up, comaplains about how shitty thier life is and draws attention to themselves, not all emos cut but most do, they listen 2 emo based music, they wear all black with a bit of red..more stuff i just cant remember atm

Can you please explain to me what an emo is then Ian?

Ian

www.fourfa.com is a good resource on what it really is. It is not on mtv or the radio, that is a bastardised version which is pretty much just pop-punk

Best thread ever.

Re: APC, Mer De Noms is one of the best albums I've ever heard, but the following two (13th Step and Emotive) suck 'rats through straws' as Severian so aptly pointed out. The Imagine cover is a disgrace, and just because a band gets 'more political' doesn't mean the music didn't take a huge fucking dive in terms of quality.

But hey, at least Tool will never suck ;)

Universal truth, right there.

I actually really like 13th step, I thought it was a great come back album from the amazing Mer De Noms. As for Counting Bodies Like Sheep, that is not nearly as good as 'pet', which is a much better song.

Indeed, i really like APC, but I would have to say I prefer both Smashing Pumpins, NIN and Tool (three of the bands members of APC were recruited from) to APC.

I'm actually trying to get hold of Tool tickets at the moment, for when they come to the UK in the summer. Tool are one of my favourate bands.

I remembered it was a Lennon song when I saw some replies, that's why it sounded familiar. I'm not into Lennon at all. My bad dude, don't be an asshole and rub it in my face.

NO! Learn something.

Sorry man but if Simple Plan isn't emo then what is?

Are you defending them from being called emo? Or are you saying there's no such thing as emo and it's just a bullshit label?

You forgot about Twiggy man, he's from Marilyn Manson. Those are three kickass bands but Marilyn Manson tears them to pieces.

Simple plan is pop-punk, but I did think My Chemical Romance was emo-rock, not really emo-punk, and definately not emocore. What do you think they are genre-wise Ian?

I'm no 'asshole' I'm just saying what everyone is thinking, if you didn't know that Imagine, arguable the greatest song ever written, was by John Lennon you aren't exactly savvy about music, but then, you like Marilyn Manson, so we shoulda known that already.

Simple plan isn't emo, I'm not going to give you a massive history lesson but here is a run-down. 'Emo' (originally shorthand for emotional hardcore) stems from the Washington and East coast US hardcore scene of the late 80s and includes bands such as Kingface, Rites of Spring, Fugazi and Moss Icon, then in the 90s bands like Evergreen and Mineral carried on emo, these bands were not singing about middle class teenage angst and a listen to them would reveal to you that there are very few similarities (musical, thematic, or otherwise) between the trend in pop-punk with The Used and the like and the actual seminal works of Emo.

Simple Plan's first album was nothing but cheesy pop-punk, then the trend of pop-punk bands singing about their 'shitty lives' strikes and unsuprisingly Simple Plan have a whole load of the trite garbage on their next album. Unfortunately this terrible trend has been called 'emo', and the general public is even associating horrid stadium rock shit like From First to Last with the awesome legacy of the DIY emo bands who actually played from 'their fucking heart' and Dischord records.

Call it what it is, sappy pop-punk. Please don't use the term Emo.

Well, considering that his nickname is "Punk Rocker" but he seems to listen to modern commercial "nu metal" crap, that should've told you something.

By the way, I don't ever plan to hear this cover, I bet it's the pathetic "dammit I wish I was the person who wrote this song" kind of cover. Fuck, I hate covers. Most I've heard suck.

No I didn't forget him, he plays for NIN and he does not play for Marilyn Manson anymore.

Marilyn Manson tears them to pieces.

Only if you like generic pop-rock made by an unorigional and uninspiring prat and his band, who would do a lot better if they were an instrumental band.

Tool kick all kinds of ass, and Manson just isn't on the same level. As for the Pumpkins, theres nothing to say other than that you have no idea what you are saying.

Marilyn Manson holds his influences from NIN, which just goes to show you which is better.

Ian do you like Dashboard confessional and Jimmy Eat World? ;) :P

I didn't realize it was a cover until after I made the thread, call me a dumbshit or whatever.

I'm a punk, I just like metal better now. My favorite punk bands are Anti-Flag, The Suicide Machines, and Rise Against. Being punk doesn't mean you have to hate all other kinds of music.

Even if you don't like Manson I don't know how the fuck you can say he's pop. Metal or gothic rock. He's really original and his music inspired me to be a revolutionary in the first place. He's not a prat he hates the government and capitalism and he also paints and writes books.

Tool kick all kinds of ass, and Manson just isn't on the same level. As for the Pumpkins, theres nothing to say other than that you have no idea what you are saying.

You're right about Tool, I dunno what you have against the Pumpkins though. They're not as hard as most of the music I listen to but their still cool.

No shit dude every band is influences by some other bands, that's like saying the older the band the better.

Ian do you like Dashboard confessional and Jimmy Eat World?

Ian you should just give up man, what emo means has just changed from you thought it means. Even kids I've met who call themselves emo listen to pop punk and shit and call it emo.

Invader Zim

Even if you don't like Manson I don't know how the fuck you can say he's pop.

because he's popular and is cashing in on an image and style which was been made before him by better bands. NIN being a fine example.

He's really original and his music inspired me to be a revolutionary in the first place.

Oh dear... Thats almost as bad as when i hear people saying they became leftwing because of RATM.

I dunno what you have against the Pumpkins though.

I don't have anything against the pumpkins they are among my favourate bands, I am saying they are much better than Manson.

that's like saying the older the band the better.

They usually are. I like a lot of bands like Placebo, but I would never claim that they are better than bands like the pumpkins and the pixies who influenced them. Though on occasion some bands who rip of other bands are better. Take Dragonforce as a prime example.

I disagree with you on imagine, but passive is one of their best songs and would have been on any of their albums.

i really like the album, it has covers of a great many songs i had previously heard and liked and has only made them better

but its true that passive is the best song

(if anyone didnt know it was written by danny lohner, trent reznor, billy howerdal and maynard james keenan, for their tapeworm project, which in the end fell apart)
