Good call RZ.

These threads have always been fairly common, and when the poll function became available even more so. However of late it has become ridiculous. There are more than enough of these about for a long time. The general consensus is that you will not please anyone with such limitted options.

Dr. Rosenpenis
13th March 2006, 00:02
I wouldn't mind if you were to make a thread simply asking what music genres RL members like.
asking for a single "favorite" genre is already dumb, and asking from a total of 10 options is even dumber
why bother?

Ol' Dirty
14th March 2006, 23:43
I'm sadened that people tell people not to make polls altogether when the options are open. It's hypocritical. If people really want bad polls gone, get rid of the option to make them. If you really think polls should be gotten rid of, PM me, and I'll be the first one to support the movement.

Dr. Rosenpenis
15th March 2006, 00:03
open ended questions with limited options are ridiculous and useless. Just ask people -- what's your favorite musical genre?

we've had good polls, like "what's you favorite album by so-and-so artist?"
Or "What's your favorite sub-genre of punk?"

Why? Some pop is good, if it weren't it probably wouldn't be popular.

The Beatles, the Police, the Who, The Shadows, etc. All very popular bands and all very good bands.

i hate this attitude people hold about something that is popular that it must be shit.

I was pointing out that Punk and Metal are vastly different and that many people like one genre whilst being indifferent to the other - thus I think they shouldn't have been grouped together using my revolutionary system of '/'

Kraftwork, decent electro? What a novel suggestion!

personally, I am in the school of thought which places Kraftwork at the bottom of the list. Of course one must respect the fact that they were among the first of the genre, but that only inflates the fact that others have massively improved on their work.

Personally, I have become rather partial to some of gary Numans work, especially some of his newer stuff, like Domination Day. I also quite like Depeche Mode, synth pop all the way.

why is Techno in the same genre as Pop? are Aphex Twin and Justin Trousersnake really two sides of the same coin?

Why no Indie?

Also i voted Pop/Mainstream/Techno and meant (in the absence of an "Indie" option) to vote for Punk... can i get that changed please?

It would be scattered either in Techno or Metal. I know Nine Inch Nails is considered to be more or less 'Industrial' than plain rock but this is because the genre is not actually mainstream or he simply forgot to put it up. :P

Why isn't Disco on the list? "Disco's not dead...he's just in the drunk tank."

And as for the choices that are their how do you classify incredably versitile bands such as the RX bandits, The junction(great canadian indie band, check em out) and Tool, WHo switch from metal to ska to pop, record to record and song to song.

And then theirs hybrids. someone mentioned that metal punk and hardcore are all completely different. Not true AFI are a self proclaimed merger of metal and punk, and they almost single handidly started hardcore.

Where dose Frank Zappa qualify?

In short music, musicians, and their fans are way too unique to narrow down like this.

Metal. Mostly black and death metal, with some folk thrown in now and again. I listen to a lot of ska as well, and given that I can only click one I'm glad Punk and Metal was paired, as I can pretend I can make the connection between those two genres without being disembowled by some of my friends. http://redwing.hutman.net/%7Emreed/Assets/necromancer.jpg

Necormancer has a supernatural ability to bring long-dead forum discussion threads back to life. After having been flogged to death the thread may have been deceased for many years, and bringing it back may have scant relevance to the current topic, yet Necromancer will unexpectedly exhume the thread’s rotting corpse, and strike horror in the forum as its grotesque form lurches into the discussion. The monster, instantly recognized by all who knew it in life, seems at first to breathe and have a pulse, but, alas, it is beyond Necromancer’s skill to fully restore the thread’s original vitality. The hideous apparition may frighten away some of the weaker Warriors or Warriors badly wounded in former battles, but the thread is only a shadow of its former self and very quickly expires.
Unlike Archivist (http://redwing.hutman.net/%7Emreed/warriorshtm/archivist.htm), Necromancer compulsively saves every forum message in carefully preserved archives for future use in battle, while Necromancer collects departed threads merely for the thrill of resurrecting them. Some say he performs this unnatural act out of malice, others say he can’t help himself, but no one really knows.
