To me these anglocentric tests are useless in determining intelligence in groups other than white anglos. This teacher is playing with fire.

Of course blacks as a population have a slightly lower average IQ than whites...they're also probably slightly shorter and have a slightly lower average life expectancy. This is exactly what you'd expect when comparing *any* economically disadvantaged population to an economically advantaged one, because material deprivation effects development and growth and health during every stage of life. Its not a genetic thing, you can find the same health related gaps between any set of ethnic groups scewed according to class lines. The only thing that people want to surpress academic discussion of more than biology is class.

In any case you're talking about populations that overlap and statistical differences over a huge number of people so they aren't meaningful on an individual level.

Well, for instance, say I took an IQ test and I got 100. Then for the next 6 months, all I did was sit in my room and practice IQ tests. Then I took the test again and got 140.

Does that mean my 'intelligence' has increased?

No, it means my ability to do IQ tests has got better.

Which means the test can't be measuring 'general intelligence' - which, if it was to have any scientific meaning at all, would have to be a fairly stable thing.

That statement is very accurate. Many studies done have claimed that the less developed world have a lower IQ due to lower IQ test scores. However, if you think about an average villager in the Congo versus a New Yorker, the New Yorker no doubt has had much more experience with those kinds of tests, and so their mind is programmed more to something like that, whereas the Congolese villager probably hasn't been exposed to something like that.

This is bullshit, plain and simple. Some bastard in the '70's in the US tried to do this, claimed there was an average 15 IQ points difference between black and white children. A pair of real psychologists redid the test themselves, but used fair sampling methods. Their test showed that there was an average 15 point difference between the IQs of middle class and working class children. This study showed that it was the standard of education the children received that decided their IQ, not race. Another study tested black children who had been adopted by white middle-class families, and showed that the deficit they had seen disappeared over time.

I have to say, this doesn't strike me as racism. As others have said, it's a commentary on the wonderful job society has done as for racial equality, notably in education.

There are many people far smarter than me who I outscore on IQ or standardized tests. Are they dumber? No. Is it biologically based? No.

This is simply illustrating how studies like this can be skewed demographically.

Allthough I of course agree with you, this has got nothing to do with the issue.

Just like someone would point out that communist minded people are smarter than capitalist minded people. I could then say that there are stalinists, maoists, etc. but this doesn't mean that capitalists are smarter.

Note that I believe there of course, generally, is no difference between the intelligence of black people and white people, when they are born. Racial differences could be bigger when they are grown, though, considering the system in many places are exploiting non-whites.

Also, off topic. When you hear somebody talking about their IQ and how big it is, divide that IQ by two and reduce it by 30 and you will have the right amount. Because somebody going around bragging about their intelligence obviously ain't that smart.

Mine is 326, by the way.
