could anyone give me a clear definition of it? Im trying to explain to some anarchist it isnt actually a dictatorship in the way we know it, but he keeps stumbling over the word dictatorship or something
there's a quote in a sig by rosa luxemburg somewhere on the forum which explains it perfectly, havent been able to find it though.

I don't know the quote, but I would explain it like this:- The proletariat (ie, the people), dictate what it is they wish to happen to a democratically elected group of officials who make it happen.
I expect someone has a better explanation, but I used that in a discussion yesterday and it totally floored my friend and really got him thinking about what democracy really is; both now, and what it should be. Hope it helps :)

When the proletarians become the ruling class, while class society still exists. This "dictatorship" while not the same meaning as today, would lead to the erradication of whatever's left of bourgeois society and take care of counter revolutionaries.

When talking about a traditional Leninist definition, it is a dictatorship of the party on behalf of the Proletariat (in theory, atleast).

"The proletariat, when it seizes power, [...] should and must at once undertake socialist measures in the most energetic, unyielding and unhesitant fashion, in other words, exercise a dictatorship, but a dictatorship of the class, not of a party or of a clique — dictatorship of the class, that means in the broadest possible form on the basis of the most active, unlimited participation of the mass of the people, of unlimited democracy." — Democracy and Dictatorship (http://www.marxists.org/archive/luxemburg/1918/russian-revolution/ch08.htm) by Rosa Luxemburg
