So Jamaica has elected their first woman leader. Power to them for electing a woman, but I don't know much about her and what she stands for. Her party is the governing People's National Party. So I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of party this is?

The PNP is a Democratic Socialist party. It was started by the bourgeois liberal lawyer Norman Washington in the 30s.
He was some what of a radical liberal, and supported reformists unions and universal suffrage for Jamaicans. After that (suffrage) was won, he lost the first two elections held, and then won the third.
But, back to the party, the PNP has controlled the Jamaican parliament since the late 80s, and Percival James (who is the the leader of the PNP) was elected three times in a row, so don't expect much in the way of change, reformist or otherwise.
They completely gave up even talking about socialism in the 70s, and nowadays seek to sign more free trade agreements.

Thanks Compaņero. There may nnot be any real change but we can always hope. Maybe she'll go back to the party's roots.
