has anyone seen this film? it is a really good film about how far authority will go to maintain power. i was watching it last night at 4 oclock in the morning and when it finished, i was absolutely wired. i got in one of my ultra-subversive moods!

I did quite like it, and the original far surpasses the sequal. It wasn't earth shatteringly original or great though, altough it is still a very god film.

I still think I preferred Serie 7 the Contenders, although there is a reasonable genre out there. There are other members that could suggest better films.

I enjoyed it a lot. It may not be subtle, but it gets the message across. I haven't seen the sequel but I saw it in the rental place the other day, I mean to acquire it soon.

It's a superb film. I was never expecting to like it as much as I did, and I certainly wasn't expecting it to have a message, but it completely exceeded my expectations. Needless to say I will be seeking out some more Fukasaku films.

Shame about the sequel. That was horrific.

I saw it and liked it. It was really entertaining and took me by surprise since i did not know anything about the topic before watching it.

I love the movie, it's perpetually in my top five favorites (along with Donnie Darko, Requiem for a Dream, American History X, and Brazil), but the book is simply one of the greatest works of the past twenty years. It goes deeper into the workings of the society where these kids grew up, which is really pretty Orwellian, without the shit-stained glasses of economic bias (language throughout the book seems to make the society out as equal parts Fascism and Stalinism, or more simply Fascism under the guise of socialism).

I haven't seen the sequel, though I've heard it's not too great. It does, however, involve Shuya as the leader of a revolutionary movement, so that'd be something worth watching.

yea but at the end of the first, i remembered the beginning, and it said noriko won, so i thought she set shuya up and killed him. and how did kawada deactivate the collars?

I've seen Battle Royale 1 & 2. I have Battle Royale 2 on dvd. The second film is not as good as the first. As usual, sequals suck!

No, see, that wasn't Noriko at the beginning. That was the winner of another Battle Royale, from an earlier year (the book and mangas place it back when Shuya was around five years old, and in those versions the Program's been going on for 50 years).

And Kawada deactivated the collars by hacking into the government's systems and finding the blueprints. Then he joined the next scheduled BR (later claimed to be kidnapped) so that they wouldn't have time to put a new model into place once they found out about the hacking. He pretty much wanted to just get revenge on the government for Keiko's death by starting a state of National Emergency.

The original is great but i thought they could have done better with the sequel which was more like a remake

I have Battle Royale on DVD (thanks torrents!) and I have the book. I liked how the book went more in depth with what Japan had become, but occasionally the translation felt unnatural and the spelling was off. The movie is definitely within my top 5. Really a gripping film, but the only scene I didn't like was at the end with Kitano (he gets filled with an entire clip of MAC-10 ammo, only to stand up and answer his phone when it rings).

I haven't seen the sequel, but I heard it sucks. Also, from what I've heard, I'm going to avoid the manga version. It seems they removed any form of a message, and replaced it with twice as much gore with some disturbing sex scenes thrown in.

i mostly liked the sequel but its no where near as good as the first, i think the director dieing part way through fucked it up, the end is not good. I didn't like the mangas at all, they are exactly as you say.

In the guise of politics and "movies with a message" comes the defense of an intensely overrated and largely incoherent film that acts important without really proving it.

Improve your taste in film.

Yeah, the only scene he got to direct was the one with Kitano and his daughter. Everything else was directed by his son "in tribute."

Hannah Arendt might have described the rules (and their enforcers) in Battle Royale as the banality of evil. It also shows the lack of democracy and level of authority schools have over children.

And goodly odd.

Anyone seen a Japanese movie called Visitor Q? That is truly weird.

It doesn't change the film from being incoherent and juvenile. The film's premise is interesting but it's mostly a soap opera and not a deep examination of humanity in the least.

Perhaps you should read the book described (by the film adaptation) as "the most controversial of the 20th century", which is a satire on competition in society.

I actually own the book but I've lost it. My criticism is purely of the film.

It has a neat red cover that I enjoyed immensely when I was sixteen. At that age, I should've been embarrassed.
