yesterday I met the premier of my Province named Rodney MacDonald, well he comes from the same village i come from so I had met him many times and he is actually very smart. He is a realist and not deeply religious. He is a realist and his beliefs are similar to those of many leftists. He doesn't like two-tier health care. He is Prolife but respects prochoice so he does not intend the prochoice laws in place etc. What I'm trying to say is that conservative people get a bad rep from leftists i find. I don't support a lot of their economic policies or social policies but it is not like their are fascists or stupid. I'm not a conservative but I respect them. They have some interesting points. Oh and he is progressive conservative so he is just right of centre.

Doesn't sound very conservative. He sounds like an economic conservative...however being a social-liberal and an economic conservative are positions that are at odds with each other on the surface. Of course they can be nice people, but their policies are usually horrendous to workers, women, minorities and everyone who is not wealthy and able to fully participate in the "free-market."
You can even work with conservatives, if you are a reformist, but ultimately little will change.

No one said that capitalists, even conservatives, were stupid. He's a politician - charming people is his job. It looks like he did a good one on you. Does he eat babies? Probably not. But he's opposed to everything that communists stand for and so can only be considered "bad".
And do you also respect Scarface, Putin, Ghandi and Patton?

First off, loose the "good/bad" moralistic arguements. Secondly, we should accept conservatives because they argue their position well? These people are reactionaries and would fight revolutionaries and revolutions. We have no reason to "play nice".

The problem isn't so much with conservatives as with conservatism. It's quite possible for a conservative (or any capitalist) to be a perfectly nice person. But conservatism props up the existing order of society (this is it's entire purpose!), the exploitation of workers, and this makes advocates of it my enemy...

the sad thing is that i favor conservatisim, key word CONSERVEatisim. a key fact that the majority of our leaders tend to forget, what i'm trying to say is that our (america) last democratic presidents have been more conservative then our last republican presidants (if youn can cal them that)

I agree with all of your post, but this puzzled me.
If they are good at arguing, then we should learn to argue better. It is important that our position is achieved through logic and reason, not an a-priori assumption. I am not for one minute saying you should accept their values, you shouldn't, but you should note points you can't counter and learn how to.
A "smart" conservative is only good for intellectual stimulation, and as it is they are few and far between. For almost the entirety they are our class enemies, and we must bare this in mind.
