Vietnam. My Lai village massacre remembered
More than one thousand villagers and visitors on March 16 attended a
solemn memorial dedicated to the My Lai massacre in which 504 innocent
civilians were massacred by US troops 35 years ago (March 16, 1968 -
March 16, 2003).
Addressing a ceremony held at the Son My Historic Site, Tinh Khe
commune, Son Tinh district, deputy chairman of Quang Ngai People's
Committee, Pham Hoai Hai, recalled the inhumane acts of the US troops
who butchered unarmed civilians in Son My (My Lai) village of Tinh Khe
commune.
He said most of the victims were women and children.
The Son My Historic Site will display images and preserve objects
related to what has become known around the world as the My Lai
massacre.
With financial support from the State, domestic and
international organisations, the people of Tinh Khe commune have
struggled to rebuild their lives and pursue social and economic
development over the past 35 years.
Better roads, electricity supplies and medical care have helped
improve local people's living standards, they said. Almost all of the
commune's homes have access to the national power grid, he said.
The commune has one senior secondary school, one junior secondary
school, another three primary schools and a number of kindergartens.
Apart from rice cultivation, the local residents have diversified
their crops to include vegetables and fruits for the domestic market.
They had also begun to expand aqua-culture and explore the area's
tourist potential. (VNA)
