The Colombian army says it is investigating allegations of extreme abuse of some of its young recruits.
The move follows the publication of graphic pictures in a magazine.

According to the weekly Semana, the photographs show 21 soldiers being beaten and tortured at a base in the eastern town of Piedras.

The chief army commander, Gen Reinaldo Castellanos, said he was "ashamed" of the allegations and that those responsible would be punished.

In its Sunday edition, Semana said the soldiers were branded like cattle, sexually abused, or forced to eat animal faeces.

It said the victims were 18 years old and came from poor families.

Damn that's pretty fucked up.

But their not children if they're 18 right?

The point I was trying to make was that many people here have complained that the FARC has non adult soldiers (for the most part they are mistaken since the adult age in Colombia is 14). But it seems indeed safer for children to be in FARC than it is for an adult to be in the military.

True, I'm sure that the FARC keeps any young recruits towards the rear. I certainly hope that their are no hazing incidents like this in FARC but one can't really know for sure. It seems that hazing is extremely popular in many institutions particularly in the armed forces. Recently, a Russian recruit at a tank academy was injured so badly in a hazing incident that amputation had to occur. :o

Yes, he lost both of his legs and genitals because they tied him to a chair and beat him. He couldn't walk for a few days and by the time he got medical attention it was too late.

It's no surprise to me at all. Torture is a well established method used by the Colombian military in "counter insurgency" activities - or dirty war. What really shocked the buorguoise media was the fact that it was applied the own low rank soldiers. You know, who cares about the pain suffered by union leaders, peasants, leftist activists, they are with "the enemy" <_<
