NSW Police are to trial Tasers - hand-held stun guns that fire two metal probes attached to copper wires, delivering a 55,000-volt electric shock that lasts for five seconds.

Victims typically fall to the ground and involuntarily urinate, with all major muscle groups going into spasm. The guns have an effective range of 6.4 metres, with the possibility that inaccurate shooting will hit bystanders.

The new Public Order and Riot Squad will trial the Tasers for six months, according to the February 7 Sydney Morning Herald. The squad was set up on January 1 and is part of the Counter-Terrorism and Public Order unit. If the trial is successful, police minister Carl Scully said, Tasers will be issued to police on general duties.

Premier Morris Iemma said, “We are giving this specialist squad the equipment they need to crack down on criminals and troublemakers”. Being a “troublemaker” is not against the law in NSW.

Iemma added that the stun guns could also be used against individuals “committing serious civil disobedience or serious criminality”.

Chief Superintendent Peter Gillam said the trial Tasers will be used only when there was the “highest level of disobedience”. He added, “It may be an opportunity in these sorts of events to isolate ringleaders [who] need to be removed from the situation”.

A 2004 CBS News report counted more than 40 deaths related to the use of Tasers in the United States. Many of those who died following the use of Tasers had been electrocuted several times with the device. Since 2000, at least five different medical examiners in the US have listed Tasers as a factor in the cause of death.

A study by a senior cardiologist, Arch Broughton, at the Alfred Hospital in Victoria, found that Tasers could cause injury by the electrical barbs disrupting heart pacemakers. Other risks include fractures or head injuries caused by victims suddenly collapsing.

A 2005 report by Amnesty International states that there were 103 Taser-related deaths in the US and Canada between June 2001 and March 2005. Amnesty was also able to examine reports provided by Taser International Inc, which manufactures the weapon, showing that Tasers were used by police officers against children, people who were already restrained and physically disabled individuals. They were also used against distressed individuals, instead of assistance from mental health professionals.

Taser International denies that being stunned can result in death or permanent injury, saying that trials on dogs and pigs have been satisfactory.

Responding to the announcement of the trial, NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said: “There is no independent research showing Tasers are safe but a lot of hard evidence that they kill ... NSW Police introduced capsicum spray as a self-defence tool but before long it was turned into another police weapon. We don’t want a repeat of that trend. The government should ban Tasers from our streets, not expand their use.”

A police spokesperson has confirmed that the use of water cannon is also being considered by the NSW Police public order management committee, according to the February 8 Daily Telegraph.

tasers need not be effective i have seen one huge guy being tasered he was hurt but not neutralised.
pepperspray on the other hand tends to ruin your day much more when the pigs are using batons to wack you after being sprayed.

also would a heavy leather jacket not prevent the taser from getting in your flesh ?

I don't know the impact velocity of the barbs, but you could probably find out on the Net somewhere. I like the taser option, since a) you don't kill the suspect, which is good if it is me who is the suspect, and b) if you do hit a bystander, you only make them wet themselves and go all limp, which at least you can walk away from, and then of course file a law suit. Perhaps they aren't as effective on really big guys, but they will at least put a crimp on his immediate future.

What other stuff do Aussie police usually carry? Do they all have guns like our American cousins, or just pepper spray and batons, like our own lovely, friendly UK police ("Not the face, not the face! Ow, my nose")

well i know that the WA police force on trains get this new kinda pepper spray that is like foam so they can ethier a) rub it in thier hand and then rub it on your face! or b) use it to just hit one target instead of (like being on a train) spraying the individual and have the spray go thru all the compartments of the train(just like an aircraft).

i heard that from this trans guard when i was over there and he seemed pretty happy to be getting it soon  !

the australian police force get guns,(extendable)batons, sprays and cuffs thats the full set up im pretty sure, not to mention all the new powers of arrest they get!!! (might want to check up on the gear they wear but im pretty sure thats what they get towards weapons anyways, walk around the streets in the city's or where ever and you will see them and then look at there gear!)

So I guess the shields, guns, rubber bullets, billyclubs, pepper spray, helmets, facemasks, and other riotgear aren't enough. I guess the pigs need more weaponry to fight the oppressed poor who have nothing but rocks, fists, spines, and hearts.

they carry it all hun. guns, batons, and CS. although i believe the CS is only brought out at protests - not entirely sure.

the oppressed poor who have nothing but rocks, fists, spines, and hearts.

well we can easily bring more potent weaponry but that would result in a shoot out.
heck i even read military vehicle tabloids you can buy all sorts of armored vehicles including tanks.
its so sweet imagining how a BMP-1 would ruin the pigs day when it shows up to break their toys.

armored scout cars are about as expensive as a new car but i would not use them for anything but the revolution.
if used for a simple riot it might provoke anti tank weapons to be issued to the pigs for a just in case scenario.

Jebus, the police carry anti-tank weapons where you are?

I mentioned this in another thread, tooling onceself up in the same armour as a riot policeman is fairly cheap (around about £250-£300, but I can't say that for definite as I lost the website I saw it all on ) and a smart idea if you are often in the front-row of a riot.

The police have better weapons (although not necessarily) because they are so hugely out-numbered. Like I said in that other thread, if a riot really wanted to go anywhere the police wouldn't be a ble to stop them due to sheer weight of numbers. It's when protests and riots stand still that the police can then disperse them.

Of course, in a one-on-one with a policeman I'd not like to be on the end of a taser (or, for that matter, a pistol or an ASP baton), which makes small-scale fights pretty pointless. I say get good at running, until such time as we can turn and run AT them rather than away :)

 fortunatly not but if groups of us would throw our cash together we could easily afford armored vehicles heck even old APC's like the soviet BMP.
so its possible to use such vehicles in riots but if we did that the pigs would probably end up being equiped with anti tank weapons.

think about it if the revolution comes and some groups of communists bought armored vehicles as a preparation we could literally drive over the cops to secure our objectives and only the army would be able to stop us.
but before the army would be able to act against citizens it would take hours before the OK would be given.

it all sounds very fantastic using armored vehicles and even old tanks but its possible to get them via the internet.
besides the short sighted politicians would never even consider it possible that communists could afford stuff like that so the regulations are a joke (because afterall we are talking about something only capitalists could afford)
also the usage of such vehicles would allow us to take over much faster then without them.
and because speed = life saving it has to be considered as a serious option.

I think you mean, to oppress the masses.

This shit is kinda scary, and I'm glad I'm not spending too much time in NSW. But if the "trial" turns out to be a "success", then it won't matter where I am.

apathy maybe

I am interested in what sort of clothes one could wear to protect oneself against this sort of weapon. Non cunducting things would be better, and armour so that the barbs can't reach skin.

Fucking cops.
