View Full Version : High School club for leftists

I probably should have done this a long time ago, but I have just recently come to realize that there are actualy quite a few committed leftists at my school. Real leftists. Over the past week we've been discussing the idea with some faculty members. The club must be sponsored by a teacher. We can't be too radical or selective of the people who join. I live in a very conservative place. There are very few leftists. If it wesn't so, I probably wouldn't even bother with a silly high school club, but as it is there are few leftists of varying levels of committment and radicalism, so I can't be too ambitious. We would like, if we can, affiliate ourselves with some broader organization of youth groups to give us more credibility and direction. Otherwise, we would need a cool name. Any suggestions? For anything at all?

Cool. As for larger organisations, there's the Youth organisation of the Free People's Movement (can't remember the web address, someone on here has it in their sig :D), or even the FPM itself depending on the age of the guys in club.

Much encouragement and appreciation, I'd do the same if I thought anyone would join it <_<

Rather than forming a club, you could just form a group. That way, you don't need a club sponsor and won't have to worry about all the bureaucratic nonsense. That way, you could be a bit more seletive so the local democrat won't try to join.
If your school is conservative, how will you be able to find a teacher to sponsor it?

there are about two realtively inteligent democratic teachers

we certainly won't welcome democrats

they're kind of a party... the free people's movement
we don't really want to limit our membership to one single party's ideology

I'm starting to think that thne best course of action will be to just begin an independent club

we were thinking "gulf breeze high school partisan league"
or just "partisan league" informally

any other suggestions?

No offense dude but having a school club is kind of a shitty idea, just make an undergound group and meet somwehere secretley.

My personal suggestion, whatever form the group takes, it should be run by all the members in it ... Im sure that was your plan anyway.

Having this kind of Anarchist organisation, stops any particular ideology from illegitimately taking over. Everyone can contribute, socialists, communists, anarchists, without discrimination...

Check out This sticky (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=30110) at the top of the practice forum.

If you want to link to an organisation, what kind were you thinking of? I can recommend loads.

Form a school students union. THats what I'm trying just now. It's easy enough to also engage in discussions of other political issues there too if you wanted to.

The idea of starting a club for high school is an excellent way to get the younger ones educated , but to be fair discuss all forms of socialism especially if you are on school grounds, that way you are promoting a specific belief over a;ll others. This will help you decide where beliefs will be centered. In your discussions talk about theory and world events, this would help all realize how it all comes together as a world movement.

Any probs just ask someone will be happy to help you solve them.

At the local high school where I live.. the school has several leftist groups. Anti Racist- School Task Force.. supports some efforts of the ARA unoffically, NDP youth~ psuedo leftist, World Awareness Club- raising awarness of corperate exploitation around the globe... and The Political Club- usually supports a very left view.

..every high school is different.

How about [school's name or town's name] Anti-Imperialism leage, named after the the American Anti-Imperialist League that was formed in 1898 (disbanded in 1921) to oppose the US invasion of the Philippines.

Not that we should limit our action to the confines of bourgeois legality, but I believe that forming a High School club open to all students would be a significant step in bringing communism into the political discourse of young working class people in the area.

Unfirtualty, we cannot plot violent and illegal acts since we are sponsored by the school.

And forming a student union independent of the school would be very hard and most likely receive very little support.

Oh. I guess not everyone thinks like me. Shit.

Alright dude but you know that if you want revolution you'll have to do illegal acts sooner or later, that's why they're illegal.

yes, that's why I said that we shouldn't limit our action to the confines of bourgeois legality

I hope you're right and that you will be able to impact them in some way. I find that the average high school student tends to have major negative reactions towards radical leftism due to the propaganda drilled into them by parents and the educational system. Anyways, at least your club will allow people to see that there is an alternative to the Young Democrats and Republicans  .

If your school has a debate team, I highly recommend getting involved with it.

I just finished giving a two hour lecture to the debate team over Marxism...we discussed everything from surplus value to historical materialism and critical interpretations of Marx. Everybody walked out of the room a little more sympathetic to Marxism.

I have also met several highly left-leaning debaters at tournaments as well. The debate coach at my school used to be a Marxist himself, and the coach last year was a social democrat with Trotskyist sympathies.

The debate program is definitely great for Marxists (and non-marxists) to spread ideas to a crowd that is generally willing to listen.

Janus, RedZeppelin: Damn, you guys are right.

I'm sort of ashamed to think that I am graduating in a few months from high school and never thought of anything like this. Granted, the club would be just me and the one Marxist economics professor's son, but hell, at least we could try to share some viewpoints.
