g'day fellow socialists. firstly i searched some other section on the question i am about to ask and didnt find anything, any way hear goes...
my question, gene rodenberry's star trek universe, especially but not only, star trek: generations, has an interesting social belief system (politics, duty, freedom, materialism etc..) behind it, and also in deep space nine we see that not every human is in the federation and they have lots of freedom and yet the society doesnt fall apart (i realise these things are fictional but the theories behind them seem interesting)
(i read the previos post http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php...38&hl=star+trek (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=36138&hl=star+trek) )
i just wanted to ask what in your minds this society has in terms of political systems if any
also i the starship troopers universe seems very interesting to me...the whole citizen ship thing
i am fairly new in the learned department and as such cannot fully identify the different systems that are present and any elaboration would be greatly appreciated

also what type of system is plato's republic...its classed but based on ability not status

once again any input would be helpful in my development as a human being :D

About what society are you asking? Socialist society or modern society?

Plato's Republic advances the idea of 'philosopher kings', not any form of republic. Plato and Aristotle alike both believed that a sole ruler should retain all power in the state. These views were influenced by the way Athenian democracy so unjustly put Socrates to death.

My take on the whole thing is that the federation as there called have a system where money doesnt exist, poverty is gone, crime is gone and people work to better human kind.

It's interesting how alot of Plato's works suffer from bad translations from the language going out of date. Plato meant a society of equalls. Republic still has this meaning, though it is seldome used. Just as The Appology really has a meaning that is more like "the defence."
