The Spanish supreme court today approved a government request to permanently ban Batasuna, seen as the political wing of Basque armed separatist group ETA; though popular in much of Spain, the move is strongly opposed in the Basque Country and has met with much concern and criticism abroad and under normal circumstances might at least be expected to make major headlines across the world.
The timing of the announcement, of course, is entirely coincidental.
