In Sweden all Male citizens have to enlist and do some physical and psychological test. But basically, if you tell them that you don't want to you don't have to.

Yes, it is (I am currently in Australia, but I am answering for Croatia).

I was informed yesterday that a call for military service arrived at my adress in Croatia. Fortunatelly, I don't need to go before finishing university, so I hope I will study until compulsory military service is abolished (they say it will happen soon).

But it is compulsory to sign up with the 'Selective Service' when you turn 18 which makes you eligible for the draft.

Nothing that he did was against German laws, he wasn't prosecuted. It has its relavance today when people do things that are wrong, but are still legal.

In the US there is something called the "poverty draft." Poor youth join when they cannot find a job and are in situations where they must leave their current homes.

There was a draft during the Vietnam War. All of it was abandoned at the end of the war. In 1980, Carter reestablished the government bureau that keeps a list of draftable men (registration). There were many protests against it. Beginning in 1982, about 20 young men were prosecuted for failing to register at post offices.

Nowadays, some schools have patriotic teachers who hand out registration cards in classrooms. There are also military recruiters who walk around in the poor parts of cities and try to get young people to come to their offices--as if they are "appointment setters" for cell phones or something. It's really disgusting.

By the way, millions of young men emigrate from their home countries every year to avoid military induction.

I hate it when the military comes to my school and trys to recruit me. I tell them I don't believe in your imperialist ideals and goals please do not come seeking me again. I would never join the American military but a nation that has good ideals and does not bully others nations than I would have no problem joining. I have respect for are military men but I dislike there ideals and goals.

My parents and many of their friends was sentenced to 3 months or more of jail after refusing military service.
I find it intressting how the goverment punishes people because they refuse to learn how to kill people.

Yes, here in Denmark is there also a chance that you might get draftet. If you refuse to do it you are set to do forcelabor for 3 months or something like that! pretty fucked up.

it used to be compulsory in belgium, you had to do a year in military or civilian service, or you could refuse and spend that year in prison.
The year in prison didn't count for your pension so you had to work a year more than someone that did service.
Fortunate for my dad he didn't have to go because he was the eldest(sp?) of 7 children ans was expected to co-provide for the family togheter with his dad.

well, I'm glad i don't have to go, and that my country i splanning to decrease it's military force by half (from 40000 troops to 20000)

i think it's a good quote :)

i intereted it as saying, the governments make laws, but that doesn't mean those laws are "right". laws can be wrong sometimes, just as illegal things can be right sometimes. :D

there was a line from bob dylan "the germans too, had god on their side" i like that quote.
