I just finished reading the Communist Manifesto and was wondering if there was a difference. I know that all societies(USSR, Cuba, etc) that claimed to be communist didn't practice Marxism/Communism the way it was intended(ownership of property just switched from private to state ownership without becoming collectively owned by the proletariat) but I was wondering if there is a fundamental difference between the two and if so what is it? Thanks in advance.

I consider much of Marxism to be a philosophy, while I consider Communism to be an ideology. Also remember that Communism to be a very broad term and marxism to be a bit narrowed down.

Marxism is a theory. It includes Marxist philosophy, Marxist economics, Marxist sociology, historical materialism and so on. Marxist is a person who agrees with those scientific and philosophical ideas.

Communism is a social and economic system. Communist is someone who fights for that system.

Communism is a socio-economic system, and a movement. Communism includes all different branches of communist theory (Marxism, Marxism-Leninism, Marxism-Leninism-Maoism, etc...) whereas Marxism is just one (the core) theory.

After reading Lazar's post I decided that I must add something to definitions I wrote in my previous post.

Communism is also a movement which fights for the system described in definition in my previous post.

Communism is the material proletarian movement that negates capitalism.

Marxism is the scientific communist theory about the conditions for the liberation of the proletarians.
