chaos is confusing

I had asked this question on another part of the forum--maybe the wrong one. Can anyone explain the chaos/violence at the universities at Bejing as the Cultural Revolution was unfolding . In other words, what were the issues, who was fighting whom, what were the outcomes,etc. I read a book supposedly written by Mao's doctor and he mentions this chaos and violence but it is extremely confusing and I hoped someone could give me some info to help clear it up for me. Thank you
