Ok I know technically why, but why does the U.S have such a hard on for Cuba? I mean damn the right-wing guys in Miami can't be that influential right?

Ok so it was placed in 1962 pretty much to undermine the Cuban government, but at that time it just made Cuba more closer to the USSR in the form of government, correct? So instead of Cuba rejecting communism because the embargo was placed, Cuba did the exact the opposite, so my question is why hasn't the United States admitted, that's it we took a "loss" and just lift the embargo?

Look at what congressmen Lincoln Díaz-Balart said on March 25 1998

For the embargo to be lifted, 3 things most happen:
1. The establishment of a transition government in Cuba that would free all of Cuba's political prisoners
2. The legalization of all political parties.
3. A call for public elections.

What exactly does establish a transition government mean? Just one that isn't communist? If so that's highly offensive.

One more thing. Who (countries) is defending Cuba? Why aren't their international demands that the embargo be lifted? Every damn year in the U.N, the assembly votes against the U.S embargo. So why isn't it lifted? Is the U.S that much of a superpower it can disobey whichever rules and follow the ones it likes?

I know its alot of questions but this subject blows my mind completely.

I didn't know this, but I assumed that someone must have spoken out against the embargo. The fact that the US ignores the Un's rulings can simply be added to the ever-lengthening list of similar offenses. Most assumingly (to me) is Bush's new-found envionmentalism in his State of the Union speech (I haven't watched it but I've picked up the gist from posts about it), when just last year he refused to sign the Kyoto Agreement! :o

What does the embargo entail by the way? Is there still a US Navy fleet parked off the coast of Cuba searching every cruise ship that comes close? What are the actual conditions of the embargo? I know all the trade stuff (Cuban cars "run on vodka" that sort of thing), but how do they enforce this?

Read this article, UN votes against the Embargo: BBC article on EMBARGO (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3242077.stm)

^ That is dated 2003, and it said the U.N has voted twelve times in a row to lift the embargo. If this isn't abuse of power by the US I dont know what is.

Interesting to see who are the ones still in favor:

Only three nations voted against the motion - the US, Israel and the Marshall Islands. Two others abstained.

Not suprising, although the Marshall Islands caught me off guard.

This is sickning what the US Gov't has done to the people of Cuba and other Latin American countries. I am reading a book now call "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" And it discuss how the US is no longer using large-scale military involovemnt to get country's to do favors for the US and other stuff such as oil they are giving devloping nations huge loans that they will never be able to pay-back so the US use's that as economic and political leverage.
