2 questions: how were they weakened and how can we re-strengthen them?
it is self evident that revolution shall come out of a general strike, and i am getting impatient of sitting on my arse!

How is the weakness of the TU's an excuse for "sitting on your arse"? There's hundreds of things you should be doing if you really care about the movement.

They were legitimised by the state, and absolved into capitalism...

The trade unions have also lost power because there is fewer traditionally industrial jobs, which were the most unionised movements. People move into 'white-collar' jobs, where unions are publicised less, and are less active. Plus as the above post said, they have just become absolved into the Labour party, which has become less and less leftist.

As Additives Free said. Also in the UK we have the anti-trade union laws which were kept in place after Thatcher.

I think one of the anti-trade union laws is that you have to give your boss notice of a strike, which is really pathetic in terms of class struggle.

One of the best unions I know of is the syndicalist union I.W.W.

They are reformist in their very character, theres no point in trying to make them into some kind of revolutionary vehicle even if it were possible. The IWW is mostly still existant for nostalgic reasons it seems...
