I think France and Germany are most likely looking out for themselves too. I know, it is sad, but hell....at least it's some opposition to the U.S. It's a start, right?

Actually, there's nothing wrong with that. You can't allow rival countries to walk all over you. This money is needed to take care of the Russian people... and line the pockets of the capitalists there of course.

This is all part of Saddam's clever survival tactic. Maybe you haven't heard of it. I'll explain it to you.

Sanctions forbid free oil trade with other countries from Iraq, only allowing them to sell oil to the States for food in their "Food For Oil" program (sinister sound to it, eh?). Sanctions do not forbid, however, the making of deals that will go into effect after the sanctions are lifted. So Saddam went and made deals with several potentially influential countries, namely Russia, China, France, Germany, and Poland. This means that these countries desire a different outcome to this conflict for their own economic interests. Saddam is a cunning survivor and continues to surprise me.

What do expect from a capitalist state? Capitalist society is very pragmatic, each capitalist and thus each capitalist state cares only about its own profit and always defend its own self- interests.
Interests of different imperialistic states are always in contradiction to each other, they always clash and there are always winners and losers. This is capitalist reality.
All states which oppose the future war, don't oppose it for the reason of their peace- loving character, rather than for the reason of protection of their interests. If Russia had been interested in having easy access to Iraq's oil fields, then it would have probably supported US.

The russians even tried to intimitade the kurdish government. However, they did it so awkwardly that the iraqi(arabic) opposition feared the russians even more

Why else do you think that they risk their hardly builtup relationship with the US?

Iraq exports much oil to Russia and Russian oil takes a more increasing rol in the world, a rol which could be pushed away by Iraqi oil.

And ofcourse after an attack the USA will have the power in the middle east and several bases in Iraq from which they could strike Russia fast.
