On Wednesday, the 25th of January 2006, a draft resolution aimed at installing a European-style McCarthyism was submitted to the vote of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The PACE adopted the resolution by 99 votes (out of a total of 317 titular members) against 42 with 12 abstentions.
The accompanying recommendations requesting the governments of Europe to take follow-up measures did not however receive the necessary two-thirds majority of votes (cf. http://assembly.coe.int/ASP/Press/StopPres....asp?CPID=1728) (http://assembly.coe.int/ASP/Press/StopPressView.asp?CPID=1728)). That was made possible in particular by our protests to the members of the PACE. The protest motion below was drafted for wide circulation and signing.
A first series of 3901 signatures gathered on this site was delivered to the President of the PACE Mr Renι van der Linden, following a protest demonstration on Tuesday 24 January in Strasbourg. Different delegations from several European countries also handed over declarations, resolutions and motions with thousands of signatures.
The campaign goes on to demand the withdrawal of this resolution.
