The first time i heard them was on the Swedish festival Hultsfred. When i came home from there the first thing i did was to buy The Frances The Mute album...and since then i have considered them to be one of the greatest groups of all time.

So...does anyone here listen to them?

I saw them this summer when they were opening for System of a down, and loved there live show, but there albums arent as good, the energy is'nt there. I went to see them a second time live and i'd go again, but i think i've bought my last Mars Volta album, somethings missing on them

I've got Frances the Mute and Comatorium. They're both brilliant albums, but I haven't seen them live yet. Is anyone going to V festival this summer know if they'll be there? The guitarist and singer are from At the Drive In right? I haven't heard any of their music is that worth listening to?

I bought the commatorium cd a while back thinking it was gonna be the shit. Not really. far from it. But I know for a fact they have better stuff, I just haven't heard it yet.

They're awesome, and most likely they'll be coming to either Rock Werchter or Pukkelpop, but that's in Belgium, so probably not very interestign for the lot of you. Roskilde perhaps?

Cut that city and Concertina is on the Tremulant EP. I'm going to roskilde this year...so i really hope they'll drop by! If anyone here is going to roskilde send me a PM and we might hook up!

Fuck yeah hahaha, although I do see your lisening to them at the moment on MSN.

I saw them just over a week ago at big day out in Auckland, Fuck they were good, unfortunatly they had sound problems and only got to play and hour insted of an hour and a 1/2.

I have FTM, de-loused and scab dates, scab dates isn't as good as the other two but it's still a decent effort. Jon Thodore is awsome, he's taken his place along side Matt Camron and John Bonham as my favorite drummers, he has amazing stamana and just dosen't stop. He is quite litrally the talk or the drumming world (I picked up a mag the other day and he was metioned as a standout by a number of drummings elite rockers).

I'm gonna try find some of there earlier stuff but I doubt any record stores near me will have them, I might have to order then over the net.

I just heard they're working on a third album - anyone know when it'll be out?

I wonder what the theme will be - I think de-loused was about a friend in a drug-induced coma who killed himself when he woke up, and mute is about characters in a diary found by John Ward.

I love l'Via l'Viaquez - the solos by Frusciante sound awsome!

The thing with their live albums is that you hav to SEE them to enjoy it. Cedrics singing isn't so good...but that's because they dance so much on stage...so when you see them you don't really mind...

Jon Theodore is great...the first time i heard TMV the first thing i noticed was Cedrics singing, then i started to listen to the guitar work...and omar is an amazing guitarist! But the more i listen to them the more i notice jon...he's one of the greatest and most ingenius drummers of all time...

I bought the Tremulant at a regular record-store...but i had to import it from the U.S

Oh so so true, they were mad live.

vox_populi
30th January 2006, 19:46
Do you think that they are high on stage?

Their dancing and facial expressions suggests so...but they still know exactly what they're doing...i mean at the last gig i saw they had this like 15 min long ad lib part...and after 15 min of playing without any drums they all almost simultaneus looked at Jon who raised his hand hit the crash symbal and the entire band went back to the original riff at the same time in the right tempo and everything!
Can you really be that good when your pumped full of drugs?! :D

I don't think that i could perform that well when i'm stoned...but i haven't tried yet :P

Hey - does anyone know the track listing for FTM?
I know most of it, but I'm not sure how it breaks down after this:

1: Cigmus, Vismund Cigmus
2: The Widow
3: l'Via l'Viaquez
4: Miranda That Ghost Just Ain't Holy Anymore
5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12

I'm not sure how Miranda breaks down, or how Frances fits into it - can anyone help?

Rockfan
31st January 2006, 20:50

Other stuff I lisen too, old school stuff, led zep, hendrix, cream, the who etc

L'viva L'vesquez is the best song ever

Alot of people doesn't get the music...it's pretty "hard listening"

Rockfan
6th February 2006, 04:40
Yeah true, it's not for people who are used to radio friendly stuff.

vox_populi
6th February 2006, 10:31
I read an article where Omar and Cedric said that they didn't want any radio listeners...and that they deliberatly made their song more "hard listening" just to prevent that...

Rockfan
7th February 2006, 03:13
Hahaha, what I don't like is how everythings centered around them, and you don't hear much from the others.

vox_populi
8th February 2006, 11:18
Yeah...I think that Jon Theodore should get some recognition...but they change instrumentalist pretty frequently...Cedric and Omar are the only "real" members of the group...but Theodore has been on all records and shows

I love The Mars Volta. I've got everything they put out (minus the Live EP, which is impossible to find) and they're a great, great modern band. There was a time when I couldn't go a day without listening to De-Loused in the Comatorium at least once.

Cedrics singing isn't so good
I love his singing.

I have FTM. Miranda, That Ghost Just Ain't Holy Anymore is a great song.

But actually that entire CD is good.

I need to download their other CD...anyone know the tracks on that one? (the song names, I mean)

Rockfan
6th May 2006, 22:08
I would recommed:
Inertiatic Esp
Roulette Dares (This Is The Haunt)
Drunkship of Lanterns
Cicatriz Esp
Televators

I think those are the best tracks from the album. But honestly just get the whole thing coss they all flow on from another prity much lik FTM.

1. "Son et Lumière[1]" - 1:35
2. "Inertiatic[2] ESP[3]" - 4:24
3. "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)" - 7:31
4. "Tira Me a las Arañas[4]" - 1:29
5. "Drunkship of Lanterns" - 7:06 (incorrectly listed as 6:20 on jewel case inlay)
6. "Eriatarka" - 6:20 (incorrectly listed as 7:06 on jewel case inlay)
7. "Cicatriz[5] ESP" - 12:29
8. "This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed" - 4:58
9. "Televators" - 6:18
10. "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" - 8:42

If you can handle the excesses of FtM this should be a piece of cake. Wonderful album.

The Mars Volta are great.
I liked At The Drive In alot though, too.

Floyd.
13th May 2006, 04:55
I loved At The Drive-In. I ws excited about what would happen after the split. Sparta really let me down and are total rubbish. I remained really excited about what the talent (Cedric and Omar) would do. Deloused in the Comatorium had some okay moments but I got sick of it quickly. I get it but I'm also let down by it and the wank of it. Way too much Santana-esque bullshit and noodling for me. Frances The Mute is bloated and alienating due to it's sheer self-indulgence.

My favourites remain Relationship of Command and Vaya.

I really liked At the Drive-In, they had such raw and youthful energy. Unfortunately both the Mars Volta and Sparta are some of the lamest bands ever.

I really can't stand the mars volta they're so mediocre and pretentious it's just unappealing. Their first EP was alright though.

I really liked their first album... probably because I was into prog at the time. then when I went to go listen to their second album I thought it was total shit. Then I saw them live... and they put ona good show and all, but I still really don't like them at all.
