Does anyone like Leonard Cohen? He happens to be one of my most favourite poets/song writers/authors. I've been looking for someone to talk about Cohen sometime, very rare to find a person..

Pg.99 wrote a song called "The Lonesome Waltz of Leonard Cohen", but that's all I've heard of him. Who is he? What kind of music does he play?

Leonard Cohen is great.
"Songs from a room" is an excellent album. His tune "The partisan" is quite stirring.
"The Butcher" , " The old revolution" and "The story of Isaac" are all truly great songs.
He is also a published poet.

I love Lenord Cohens poetry, but find him to be lacking as a musician. I personaly think he only turned to music so people would liusten to his poems. And when he won the award for best canadian vocalist, that was ridiculos, he cant sing. Good guy, good poet, good Canadian, BAD singer.

Leonard Cohen is great, one of the all time best singer songwriters and just because he dosen't have a 'nice' voice dosen't mean he can't sing...

Such an important point it had to be repeated three times, eh? ;)
Personally, I think Cohen has a decent voice. Didn't even know he was a poet to be honest. Great musician though, Hallelujah being one of my favourite songs ever.

i really like leonard cohen's early stuff, his first three albums in particular (especially his debut)
i've never really heard a lot of his later songs
and i really like his untrained vocal style...it fits especially well with the stark, lonely, acoustic music of his first album...imagine frank sinatra singing "stranger song"...or even "suzanne" for that matter

Lazar, Leonard Cohen is a famous canadian poet, songwriter and an author. His poetry is his music, he is very much like Bob Dylan but way better. He is also a somewhat accomplished 'singer', and even though he doesn't have the best voice -- thanks to smoking -- he can still get the job done, heck even a couple of his songs are very suitable to his voice. One of his most famous books were Beautiful Losers, which was released back in the 1960's if I believe, and it was a very daring move as the book contained alot of naughty bits.

i don't know about his early folky sound (sorry folk music never resonated with me except maybe Dylan) but I REALLY dig his music after his voice got all deep and raspy. I'm sorry but I love that whole raspy, i smoke 8 packs a day and drink whiskey by the gallon, Tom Waits sound (yes i know Cohen came first). I'd also have to say he is a great lyricist. And no, I never slept with the guy so you don't need to accuse me of being his groupie. (Unfortunatly he's dead now so I'll never get the chance -- darn) (3 cheers for parenthetical statements)

WTF? Leonard Cohen's dead?!
Unless it's happened very recently I'm fairly sure he isn't. He had a new album out within the last year or so as I remember...

false alarm. i heard a tribute to him on NPR awhile bak. I guess I came into it halfway and assumed he had died. Usually NPR won't tribute a man till he's dead. SORRY!

Holy shit, you scared me by saying he's dead. And no, he isn't dead. You must've mistaken the news title for him VISITING his best friend's funeral or that he is being nominated or something.
Even if I said something about his voice, I still love it. It suits his poetry perfectly.

He's brilliant. I'm not sure why so many people on this thread think he can't sing.

He is a living legend,on par with dylan. His vioce is beutifull,he may be a abd singer but he is a great vocalist, dylan couldnt hit high notes either, doesnt mean he is a bad vocalist.I love songs that have history attached, not this crap pop that has taken over,he is a true poet, long may his words echo..........

wasn't he some nobel prize winner or nominee for literature? i love leonard cohen. despite his religion, his work encompasses a limitless range of emotions and desires. there are certain artists who, if you are privy to american rock culture, you must be familiar with. leonard cohen is one of them.
