do you think the western governments delibrately allow unemployment to stay low so people consider a career in the army? otherwise, if it wasn't for the fact you couldn't get another job, i don't see why anyone would join

I think you mean they're keeping the inemployment high, not low. and yes i think it is intentional. Personaly, and i think i speak for alot of people, i would rather be unemployed then in the army. And don't underestimate the number of brainwashed jarheads out there, unfourtunatly alot of people go to the millitary of their own "free will"

Why is military service such a bad thing?

Because people who join the army are risking their lives and killing others in order to protect the ruling class. That isn't a good thing.

Well it works nicely, that is for sure. Capitalism cannot exist without unemployment. Nor can it exist without war. However, I would be more likely to conclude that unemployment is high in order to force the workers to do shitty (and/or low paid) work. I don't know if it is "intentional" per se, but more just the way that capitalism works.

Reserves in Aus is a pretty sweet deal - tax free pay, they pay for a degree when you want to leave, all the training ect without actually killing anyone or anything

aye just you tell yoursel' that when you land in Iraq. Seriously reserves get called up sometiems. There are ta in Iraq.

Andm as already mentioned capitalism naturally functions like this, I wouldnt think governments needed to specifically make the economy do such things. They can jsut target working class areas for recruits.
