Is it just me or does it seem like that fidel has strayed from the revolution? You suppose hes religious or do you think hes doing it for the people?

It could be a move to get the Vatican of his back.

I think Fidel has lost sight of any revolutionary ideals or ideas and is just trying now to save cubas economy and just to suvive. He is trying to get allies on his side before the Us decides to press for action against cuba. I would much rather see his brother Rual in power as he is a much stronger communist, with clear set ideas, is he still alive though?

Damn, redstar2000 beat me to it!

I agree with Guardia Bolivariano.
Fidel is no idiot, and he knows what he must to better his image.

Yet, I still feel this is a terrible mistake, since the Roman Catholic Church has always sided with the rich in Latin America and across the world.

Religion should have no place in a socialist society. Fidel should know better than to recognize the Church and give them any power, as small as it may be.

Fidel also used to wear a cross of some religious significance during the early days after the revolution. I think Guardia Bolivariano is correct. It is sad that he has to do that, however.

redstar, for some reason or other i could not get the link to show!

anyway, religion can have its place in society where it belongs. it should not rule. god rules in the hearts of men, not in churches who have so much money that they influence social justice.

doesnt anyone here believe that it is through religious entities the world is ruled? :(

Yes, Guardia, I fully agree with you.

Also, please bear in mind the power the Vatican and the Catholic religion holds. It's considered by many as one of the largest and oldest "political parties" in history.

So, in my opinion, it would be too simple to just give this article a first superficial reading. Let's read between the lines. Fidel is certainly not an idiot.

Another important thing is that Cuba's main European partners are Spain and ITALY.

Italian province of Como joins Local Human Development Program

About the convent, there is anrticle published in Granma, but it's only in Spanish, no English version yet.

Inaugurarán hoy sede en Cuba de la orden católica del Santísimo Salvador de Santa Brígida

So, I doubt Fidel has taken back the old "habit" of Catholicism, really.
