I don't know too much about left politics at the moment, but I wanted to get my head round the RAF. Were they trots, maoists, insurrectionary anarchists...

As far as I know ,they only labeled themselves as communists (maybe marxists-leninists) and an underground guerilla for the city.The RAF developed from the APO in 68 ,the out of parlament opposition in west Germany.But I would say that they used terroristic methods instead of guerilla warfare but they hadn't much members though.

Their ideology was influenced by Marcuse (One Dimesional Man), Guevara (focoism), Frantz Fanon (his advocation of political violence as necessary) and Carlos Marighella (minimanual of the urban guerrilla). If anything they would be Guevarists or Castroists.
