does anybody find it annoying that lyrically vapid bands such as green day are trying to appear political? "american idiot" was just written for teeny-boppers to think their being counter culture and in the process lining the pockets of bloated capitalist fatcats. i suppose i could go really anti-system and stop buying any band on a label and spend all my time in moles (underground pub in bath)

Shame, Green Day used to be a good band, back in the 90s they had some cracking songs.

It is not so bad at all....the more political they appear, the more the political meaning and persuading power increases in the mass culture the better it should be ,as long as people listen to the lyrics and think about them.We always should conisder and analyze mass media and see how it works on the majority and if political appearance changes anything,If someone gets into mainstream with some kind of political messages it is good,if it's on cause of the messages it is better.it might be annoying but alway try to analyze what this means for the public opinion.

Ligeia brings up a good point. Any dissemination of the message is good for the movement, whether it has a base in greed or sincere leftism. I'd rather someone like RATM did it, but hey, if 3 people out of the millions that liked "American Idiot" join in the cause, then it will have been worthwhile.

Most don't , of course but at the same time, there are some who always want to know what the lyrics are about(even if you want to sing along and don't understand all,you have to look the lyrics up)and maybe someone will try to understand but that wasn't my point.I wanted to say that we should only look at the music charts or book charts in mass media and ask ourselves why such music or book is selling that well, what do people like, need, want now ,what are they worried about...etc.?
You have to become a part of the masses (so knowing the mass media)to understand what is happening with the people`s minds.
So we shouldn't look always with disgust on such things...
