I found out that several workers were given time off in lieu of overtime pay at my place of business. Hourly workers in America get time and a half pay after 40 hours per week. Equivalent time off amounts to straight time. It's just another way that corporations save money off the back of their workers. To add insult to injury, the workers involved are unskilled, minimum wage employees who hardly speak English. I am not sure who is in charge and who instituted this practice. A new manager is correcting this problem now.
It's our collective responsibility to correct injustices that we see every day. Small acts can change everything (remember Rosa Parks). So don't hesitate to report any abuses that you see to the labor board. You don't have to give out personal information.
