Thousands of Pakistanis have taken part in anti-American protests after an attack on a village near the Afghan border that killed 18 people.

The main demonstration was held in the main city of Karachi with protesters chanting "Death to America".

The missile strike apparently targeted al-Qaeda's deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was said not to have been there.

The US has not commented on the strike. Pakistan has protested, but its leader warned people not to harbour militants.

"If we kept sheltering foreign terrorists here... our future will not be good," said President Pervez Musharraf in speech broadcast on state television.

US media say the attack was carried out by the CIA.

Zawahiri has eluded capture since the US overthrew the Taleban in Afghanistan in 2001 despite a $25m bounty on his head.

Osama Bin Laden's second-in-command is regarded as the ideological brains behind the al-Qaeda network, says BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera.

The Egyptian has also become its most visible spokesperson, issuing a number of video and audio tapes, whilst Osama Bin Laden has not been seen or heard from for more than a year.

Musharraf criticised

About 10,000 people rallied in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city, chanting "Death to American Aggression" and "Stop bombing innocent people".

Hundreds of riot police were deployed to keep order.

A leader in the coalition of anti-US Islamic groups that organised the nationwide protests said General Musharraf must step down.

"The army cannot defend the country under in his leadership," Ghafoor Ahmed told protesters in Karachi.

In Samarbagh, near the Damadola village where the attack occurred, protesters denounced Gen Musharraf for co-operating with the US.

Foreign presence

Damadola is in the Bajaur tribal area, about 7km (4.5 miles) from the Afghan border.

Jets - or in some accounts a Predator drone - reportedly fired missiles at a particular housing compound in the village.

Reports citing unidentified Pakistani officials say the strike was launched on intelligence that Zawahiri had been invited to dinner in the village.

However, a senior intelligence official told Reuters news agency they had no evidence he was present at the meal.

Damadola was the stronghold of a banned pro-Taleban group, the Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi, the agency reported an official as saying.

The US has about 20,000 troops in Afghanistan, but Pakistan does not allow them to operate across the border.

Pakistan has about 70,000 troops in the border region.

that is rather disturbing news...if Pervez Musharraf steps down, we're going to have a problem at our hands, Pakistan has nuclear weapons and if power goes into the wrong hands...say fundamentalists, the situation would be rather hard...or even impossible to tackle...and besides, i think that Pervez Musharraf is on the right track, maintaining relations with the west is the smartest thing to do at the moment since without support from the west, i don't really know what would happen to pakistan.

Any terrorist act is disturbing.

if Pervez Musharraf steps down

Not going to happen.

Pakistan has nuclear weapons and if power goes into the wrong hands...say fundamentalists, the situation would be rather hard...or even impossible to tackle

Well the US would be to blame for such a prospect.

Supporting dictators and killing innocents is not going to help their reputation amongst ordinary Pakistanis.

Look at what happened when the Iranians overthrew the Shah.

Smart in the short term, but not so good in the long term.

Extremism is only growing in Pakistan.

i don't really see a solution to the pakistani problem in the long term...with it's tense relations with india and everything, which is also a nuclear power...and an emerging economic powerhouse....and also, the growing hatered for the west amongst the ordinary pakistanis....it's chaos....i'm really curious to see what becomes of pakistan in the next few years.

I saw this on the Reuters vid-channel, and thought at once that the US, despite however usefull it's goals may be, really needs to stop trying to smash nuts with ballistic missles.

I just saw this news today on another forum, and was going to post it here if it hadn't been posted already.

This is so fucked up. The world is going to continue polarizing until a huge war breaks out.

This is typical for whichever idiot is in the White House: continue to ruthlessly kill innocent people, and yet everyone wonders why even in the US satelite states there is growing hatred for the USA. But not even smashing a rock on the head of Bush or any of these conservative nitwits will convince them that Bush's actions are only contributing to the anti-US jihad. The US rulers claim they PROBABLY killed some top al-Qaeda operatives in their attack on the Pakistan village, and yet no trace of their bodies. They day Washington captures or kills Osama bin Laden or his generals is the day I become Pope.

This is reminiscent of Nixon attacking Cambodia.
There is no way to secure/ police the tribal area on the border with Afghanistan.
This could be the sign of a wider war.

It wouldn't surprise me. I'm not sure for how long these people will take being forced to live with Washington's rape, and/or living under the US jackboot. The US has been defeated, and by the looks of it they will be once again.
