This is a good one. She should never have appologized for her original remarks - in my opinion!

I got this article out of today's Chicago Suntimes paper:

Canadian lawmaker: U.S. warmongers 'bastards'

February 28, 2003

BY SHELDON ALBERTS

OTTAWA--Canada's Liberal government faced new accusations of anti-Americanism on Wednesday after a member of Parliament who is an outspoken critic of President Bush said she hated Americans and called
them "bastards" intent on going to war with Iraq.

Carolyn Parrish, the Liberal Parliament member for Mississauga Center in Ontario, later issued a statement apologizing for the comments, which came on a day when Prime Minister Jean Chretien spoke to the U.S. president in an effort to reach a United Nations compromise in the Iraqi crisis.

"Damn Americans. Hate those bastards," Parrish said after the weekly Liberal caucus meeting in Ottawa.

Parrish made the remark at the end of a media scrum in which she told a group of journalists there was no hope Canada could negotiate a deal to avoid war because the Bush administration has no interest in peace.

"Canada has a long tradition of coming up with compromises, and I think if it flies, that is excellent. But I have no hopes for it," she said. "I watched Bush ... on television. That man is ready to go. He doesn't care. He is gunning for a fight. I think Bush is. I think he has got 150,000 troops over there, and I think he has got to do something with them."

Senior government Parliament members immediately distanced themselves from Parrish's statement, and Parrish sent out a news release late Wednesday attempting to clarify her remarks.

"I deeply regret the comments that I made today in the heat of the moment in a private conversation," her statement said. "My comments do not reflect my personal opinion of the American people, and they certainly do not reflect the views of the government of Canada."

She is saying the feelings of most Canadians. The Americans (government) are bastards and most of us say the same sort of thing when talking of the Americans. Really I don't know why our government is afraid of pissing Big Brother off. I think we should be honest more often! It will help us more!

Might be important to remember that not all Americans support war in the Middle East. I understand Parrish's frustration, though. It seems that Bush is hell bent on bombing something.

I mean, while everyone is focusing on Iraq, Bush is sneaking 1,500 troops into the Phillipines. We're supposed to be going into a sort of limited combat role over there. Don't know if anyone else heard about this, but I read about it last Friday in Yahoo's news section.

Honestly, these comments are reasonable bearing in mind Bush's stance. I live in Britain and heard an MP openly confess to parliament that Bush's was 'the most repulsive American administration I have ever had to deal with.' Anti-Bush sentiment is critically high, there are few who will defend his militaristic policies of corporate murder; why should it come as a surprise if an official gives voice to this sentiment?

I remember when the PMO's communications director said Bush was a moron...the opposition forced her into surrendering! Those pro american bastards!

Praxis, can you tell more of that situation?

Ha, they think that's bad. George Bush should hear the hateful yet rational criticism brought up at the numerous protests I've attended in the past months. Canadians have always been quite venomous when it comes to things like imperialist US foreign policy.
